Kindergarten Sight Words Game

November 14, 2015 By Valerie Mcclintick 2 Comments

SweetSightWordsHeader

If you’ve been following our blog this month you’ll have noticed that we’ve been on a bit of Sight Words binge lately!  That’s because I’ve got two boys, a 1st grader and a Kindergartner who are in desperate need of learning these important words.

I’m afraid I’ve been a bit neglectful by focusing so much on word families, phonics and vowel sounds that they’ve missed out on some of the other more important aspects of reading.

Earlier this week I released a Dolch Pre-Primer game for Preschoolers, and Today I’m sharing this Dolch Primer game for Kindergarteners. It’s called, “Sweet Sight Words, ” and it covers all the primer words your child need to know by the end of Kindergarten.  (We also have follow up worksheets for every word here).

But before I get to that I need to tell you about our BRAND NEW Sight Word of the Week Curriculum:

Sight Word of the Week covers 40 key sight words for Preschool and Kindergarten students. Each week covers a single sight word with fun and engaging worksheets, activities, games and hands-on resources.  Students put their knowledge to the test with a weekly sight word mini-book that will bridge the gap between emergent and early readers.  Providing your students with a springboard to success with this ready to use program. The 40-week curriculum covers all 40 Dolch 220 Pre-Primer words and prints in the necessary order. Simply add the pages to a 3-ring binder and you are set!  Suggested Age: PreK or K4  Click Here for Sample Pages

How to Play:

First print your gumball machine gameboards onto colored construction paper.  I love neon cardstock for game as they are bright and engaging and much less expensive than printing in color.

Gumball1

Print your gumballs onto white cardstock then punch them out using a 1.5″ circle punch.  Note: Investing a a circle punch is one the best purchases I’ve made for our classroom and ALL of our Punch and Play File Folder games on File Folder Fun are designed with this size punch, so you can create many of our games in a matter of seconds with this handy tool.

Gumball2

Each child chooses a gameboard.  You’ll notice that there are special “Candy Gumballs” at the bottom of each board.  This is just a little extra fun to keep your little ones engaged!

Gumball3

The games starts by placing all gumballs into a center jar (or coffee mug) as pictured below.  You want to be sure this is not see through.  Children take turns by drawing one gumball, reading the word and looking for a match on their gumball machine.  If they have a match they get to keep the gumball and it’s the next players turn.  If they don’t have a match they return the gumball to the center jar and it’s the next players turn.  The game continues until one player has filled their entire gumball machine with matching words (candy ball included.)

Gumball4

You can speed up the game by allowing children to draw three gumballs instead of one.  Additionally, removing gumballs that match unused gameboards will speed up game play as well.  There are five separate gameboards, each with unique words so there are exactly the right amount of gumballs for all five boards.  You can expand this game for more than five players by printing an additional copy of the game.

First Grade Mini Office

May 22, 2015 By Valerie Mcclintick 3 Comments

MiniOfficeExpansionFirstGrade

Today I have a fantastic expansion set to add to our Mini Office Printables!

Our Mini office has been an amazing resource for my son’s Preschool and Kindergarten years, and I wanted to make sure I added in a few First Grade items for his upcoming year.

I decided to offer this as a First Grade Expansion Pack and it’s full of helpful resources you can use with your students

So What is a Mini Office?

A Mini Office is basically a custom built learning resource for your student.  The goal of a mini-office is to serve as a self led reference chart for children, freeing up time for teacher to work with other students and encouraging children to find answers to their own questions. The benefit of making a mini office is also in the size and the minimal supply list. All you’ll need is a couple of file folders, scissors, glue, and your printable pages.

Print Your Free First Grade Expansion Pack Here

(It’s near the bottom as I’ve got assembly instructions and other expansions available there as well)

What’s Included in this Expansion Pack:

Math:

  • Telling Time  (clock with moveable hour and minute hands, 5 minute intervals around)
  • Place Value Blocks (written word, number form and place value up to 1000)
  • Shape Symmetry (visual depiction of a line of symmetry)
  • Skip Counting (numbers 2-12, up to 12 numbers. First Grade Use: 2, 5, 10, and maybe 3)
  • Rounding Numbers (Visual Rounding Clown to help children round and estimate)

Language:

  • Writer’s Glove (The 5 W’s: Who, What, Where, When, and Why for writing sentences)

Geography:

  • USA State Map & Compass (State Names as well as Directional Compass for daily practice)

Social:

  • My Address/My Phone (Use as Reference and Practice)

My son won’t be starting his First Grade year until this September, so I might add a few more updates to this pack by then.  Be sure you are subscribed to our newsletter if you’d like updates on available resources!

Monster File Folder Game

April 18, 2015 By Valerie Mcclintick Leave a Comment

My boys are crazy about Monsters.

I’m not sure why but they love creepy, goopy, slimy looking creatures, but they do.

Monsters can be cute too though right?

MonsterBrothersImage

My four year old drew these silly Monster Brothers and I thought they were absolutely adorable.

(Side Note: Scan your children’s artwork into your computer to save them)

I was also to happy to find these Silly Wacky Monsters from Daily Art Hub because I knew they would make for some adorable games and worksheets!

MonsterMake10Worksheet

Make 10 Monster Worksheet

Use this worksheet to reinforce key number bonds that make 10.  Children can use counters to cover the monsters while they compute the equations.

MonsterMathGame

Printable Word Family Game

April 6, 2015 By Valerie Mcclintick Leave a Comment

CrayonWordFamilyPin

Word families are words that have the same ending sound, “back,” “sack,” and “rack” are all in the “ack” word family.

Teaching children to listen to ending sounds and rhyming words is a great way to build early reading skills.

Speech File Folder Game

February 28, 2015 By Valerie Mcclintick 2 Comments

LBlendsGamePin

There is just something so fun and simple about our Circle Punch Games

that I can’t stop making them.

Maybe it’s the fact that it’s so easy to get the game set up and ready to go…..

no more cutting of obscure shapes and bumps.

Maybe I’m just being lazy.

I don’t know, but today I put together this simple gameboard for children working on beginning blends sounds with the letter L.

You might remember that my son is ready to start pronouncing words correctly (even if I’m not.)

So I’ve made this game in hopes that he will practice, practice, practice

saying those blends as he plays.

In fact, the whole family can practice because

this game can easily be played as a multiplayer version as well.

Head on over to our sister site File Folder Fun to print and play this game too:

BTW- This game uses a 1/5″ circle punch, you can find out more here.

Sight Word File Folder Game

February 17, 2015 By Valerie Mcclintick 3 Comments

Sight Word Game

My kindergartner has been making so much progress with his reading!  We’ve worked our way through many word families and it’s time to start getting serious about sight words.  I decided to make him a simple game he can play to slowly build up his sight word reading skills in a fun way.  This game features 54 different sight words from the Dolch 220 PrePrimer list and is a fantastic starting point for young children learning to read.

To play,  children roll a die and move their guy, reading the word they land on as they go.  There are detours, crosswalks, and other traffic related hazards along the way to the Candy Shop, making this a fun game that builds a bit on sportsmanship as well.

25 book set

We personally own and cherish these little books.  I must have spent an hour in the bookstore examining all the different early reader book sets they had to offer and this series was the one that stuck out the most.  Both my preschool and kindergarten aged boys love this set, we own set A, B, and C and they offer my kiddos a chance to experience success at reading which is worth it’s weight in gold. Most pages of these full-color storybooks feature just one line of simple, repetitive text to help children learn to read with ease and confidence. Click Here for Sample Pages

Consonant Blends Learning Center

February 8, 2015 By Valerie Mcclintick 1 Comment

LetterSBlendsLargePin

Well, my kindergartner is finally ready to start talking without all those slurred S sounds.

(I may not be ready for it, but he certainly is)

Personally, I think it is adorable when he says “Pagetti” instead of spaghetti and “Tooter” instead of scooter.

But alas, he is nearing 6 years old and it’s time to provide some gentle guidance towards correct pronunciation.

I made this letter S blends learning game specifically for him :)

SBlendsGamePlay

The game comes with twenty-eight different pictures of letter s consonant blends for children to match up with the correct beginning letters.

Print Letter S Consonant Game at File Folder Fun

With our easy assemble learning centers It couldn’t be easier to get this game setup and ready. Simply glue the gameboards to the file folder, and punch out the circle pictures with a 1.5 inch circle punch. Your kiddos will be mastering their S sounds in no time.

God Keeps His Promises Game

November 2, 2014 By Valerie Mcclintick Leave a Comment

GodFaithfulChildren learning about Noah’s Ark can learn an important truth that God always keeps his promises.

We have a variety of Noah’s Ark printables, crafts and resources you can add to your Sunday School Lesson, but today I wanted to add in a center time activity.

This is a game that can be placed in your learning centers or morning activity table for children just arriving or played in your own home with sibilings.

Each child receives a gameboard that reads “God keeps his promises” and has a space for each color of the rainbow.

Children take turns drawing colors from the middle hoping to be the first one to fill up their rainbow board.

If a child draws a color they already have, it’s simply discarded and the next child takes a turn.

There is even a place for children to place their favorite color.

Free Mini Office Printables

MiniOfficePrintables
This week we’re featuring a FREE Mini Office for our newsletter subscribers!
What is a Mini Office?

A Mini Office is basically a custom built learning resource for your student.  The goal of a mini-office is to serve as a self led reference chart for children, freeing up time for teacher to work with other students and encouraging children to find answers to their own questions.  The benefit of making a mini office is also in the size and the minimal supply list.   All you’ll need is a couple of file folders, scissors, glue, and your printable pages.  (Free Mini Office Printables Below)

MiniOfficePrintables3
How to Make a Mini Office:

To assemble your mini office simply cut the tabs off of two file folders and glue them back to back.  This will create a three panel office.  You can make a larger office if you want to include extra information, however I find that the three panel is useful for small hands and when it’s stood on end it makes a great privacy blocker.  (This is especially helpful if you’re teaching around the kitchen table.)

MiniOfficePrintables2
Inside the folders you glue in KEY concepts for children to help them along with their studies.

Really you can add whatever resources you want your child to study.  In a homeschool setting, I’ve found these reference folders to be helpful for PreK-3rd graders, but you could certainly use them with older children as well.  You might consider ways to build your folder so that you can expand and adapt it as your child grows.  Alternatively, you can create multi-leveled folders for each student year.  The resources provided below can be adapted to suit your needs.

Preschool Printables Color Game

May 13, 2014 By Valerie Mcclintick 1 Comment

RainbowPin

I’m so excited to share this game with you today, I think it’s super adorable and your kids are going to LOVE it!

It’s called Catch a Rainbow, and it can be played with up to eight players. (or an entire class if you print more color circles)

The printable game is available free on File Folder Fun and it couldn’t be simpler to set up.

First print and laminate your circles.

If you don’t have a laminator, I recommend using cardstock.

20140510_074947

Second cut out your playing circles.  We own this 1 1/2 inch circle punch, it’s just the right size for the games on File Folder Fun and it cuts through laminated paper with ease. Though I might be dulling my blade doing so, I’d much rather use the circle punch then hand cut all these little circles out.  What else can you use a circle punch for?  Think scrapbooking, confetti, gift tags on presents….ect.

20140510_075020

20140510_075040

20140510_112717

Finally, just turn all the cards over, or put them in a basket if you have little peekers and play!

Children take turns drawing a card and placing it on their board, first one to Catch a Rainbow wins!

Rainbow2

If you want to spice things up a bit you can write numbers on the back of the circles and children can roll a die to pick a card.

Even harder you can write small math equations on the back and children must solve or roll the answer before they choose it.

And in case you’re wondering what all the Brown, Black, Gray and White circles are for, check this out:

Catch a Color Wheel!

This game can be played the same way and  is available for free on File Folder Fun as well!

Editable File Folder Game

March 13, 2014 By Valerie Mcclintick 1 Comment

File folder games are a great way to add a little kick to your classroom!

We have an entire website dedicated to free file folder games you can print and play with your kiddos.  There are all sorts of games separated by age and subject, but just in case you can’t find the exact game you’re looking for, we decided to make an editable game board you can customize to your liking:

GameBoardPin

With this game you can edit the squares around the board, and the question cards.  This is a great way to review any subject that needs a little jazzing up.

EditableGameBoard1

EditableGameBoard2

EditableGameCardsColor

Tips & Ideas:

Use a die that only has numbers up to 3.

Sneak in a little math by using two dice and subtracting the smaller from the larger to get the number to move.

Game cards have room to write in the answers upside down.

Play so that children answer a question first, then roll and move if they are correct.

Place Value Folder Game

May 18, 2011 By Valerie Mcclintick 1 Comment

This week, in addition to multiplication, we’ve been
really working hard on learning and understanding Place Value.
A few years back I picked up a set of Base Ten Blocks,
which really made it easy for my children to visualize
what I was talking about with all this “Hundred, Tens, Ones” talk.

base ten blocks

But it’s due time to to branch out to bigger numbers…
Thousands, Ten Thousands….maybe even Millions!

So today I whipped up this simple (no frills)
Place Value File Folder Game:

We played it this afternoon for Math,
and I’m quite pleased with the results!
Both children are easily reading numbers all the
way out to millions!

I’m surprised at how quickly they picked up on it!
The game is played by drawing numbers one at a time
and choosing where to place it on your board. You’re trying
to build the biggest number you can, so you have to be careful
as once you play a number you can’t move it.

I had my children read the “Place” they were putting each number, then at the end of the game they read their entire number to see who was the winner.

An hour later and they are experts in place value and didn’t
even realize they were learning.
(or gambling….for that ever evasive 9)

How do I feel about it all?

MuuuuAhhhhhhHaHa!
(said in an “I will rule the world” kind of tone)

I uploaded this game on File Folder Fun so
you too can feel this way!

Happy Ruling!

NOTE: If you like “everyone wins” games, just print one board and work together as a team, write down each number you make and try to beat the last one!
