St. Patrick’s Day Bible Lesson Verse

February 16, 2014 By Valerie Mcclintick 2 Comments

We’ve had such a great response to our Bible Verse Printable Theme Packs, that I decided we should add a set for St. Patrick’s Day!

StPatricksDayVersePin

We currently have a ton of Trinity resources for St. Patrick’s Day, so I thought I’d switch things up a bit and make this set with the Beatitudes.

    Coins1CoinPocket Coins2

So there are eight different bible verses, each from Matthew 5, and each representing a character trait that God holds valuable and blessed.   I printed them on shamrock coins, representing a focus on treasure in heaven and not earthly treasures.

There is a printable pocket with a verse checklist on the back, these would be great to learn during the month of March!

You can print these resources free at Bible Story Printables

We would love if you would share this link with your homeschool friends and family!

Please also be aware then when we release a new resource we experience heavy traffic and download times are longer and sometimes the connection is lost midway through download resulting in a “corrupt file” when you try to access it.  If you’re experiencing this issue I recommend trying the individual download files or waiting until the traffic dies down a bit and trying again.

Bible Verse Printables

January 3, 2014 By Valerie Mcclintick Leave a Comment

VVGenesis11

We have a great selection of Bible Verse Printables

on Christian Preschool Printables!

In fact, I recently revamped that area of our website, making it easier for you to find just the right verse for your children.

All of our verses are chronologically ordered and presented so you can see the exact scripture card.

BibleVerseCardsPin

We have over 20 sets of printables for these verses.  Each set includes:

Bible Verse Visuals (Large verse for classroom)
Bible Verse Cards (Small verse for children)
Bible Verse Copywork/Tracing Pages (We recommend using these sleeves)
Bible Verse Games (Usually a file folder game)
Bible Verse Vocabulary (A word from the verse defined)
Bible Craft or Coloring Page (Something simple for Preschoolers)
Character of God in Focus (A specific attribute of God that corresponds with the verse)

These sets are perfect for homeschool or children’s ministry.

They make a fantastic add on to your current curriculum, and it’s never to early to start memorizing God’s word.

TIP:  Build on the Verses by presenting them during circle time.  Encourage children to say them with you as you point to the words!  My two and threes picked up the verses very quickly, and soon they would only need to see the image to recite the verse.  I mounted the large visual verses to construction paper and laminated for durability.  You might even hang them in your classroom when not in use, just having them up will remind the children.

Christmas Card Crafts for Kids

December 9, 2013 By Valerie Mcclintick Leave a Comment

20131117_200929

This is a simple and easy Chrsitmas Card project for kids.

In fact, this come from my own childhood.

My best friends Grandmother would save her Christmas Cards from the previous year,

and we’d decorate them with glitter and repourpose them as ornaments and gift tags.

I thought that would be the perfect project to do with my own kiddos this year.

But, of course that all takes planning, and saving the cards from last year.

I didn’t do that.

ChristmasCards2

Instead, I decided to print up a set of pictures that would be perfect for adding glitter to.

Then we can make our own cards and ornaments together.

And I just know that you’re going to love this project with your own kiddos,

so we’re offering our Subscribers these free Christmas Card download.

Join Free or Login then Download Here

How To:

20131117_195625

Materials:

Printed Card on Cardstock Paper

Fine Glitter (Here is inexpensive kind)

Glue

Q-Tip

Step 1: Cut the ends off your Q-Tip at a slant.

20131117_195924

Step :2  Use the Q-Tip to apply glue to highlight areas on the card.

You don’t want to cover the entire picture, we’re just highlighting areas that we want to sparkle.

Less is more :)

TIP:

Look for places where snow might accumulate.

Use the tip of your Q-tip to make icicles coming off the roof

All Done:

It’s hard to capture the glitter in a photo, but these are just stunning when they are done!

60% Off Online Math Program!

October 6, 2013 By Valerie Mcclintick 2 Comments

DEMO
Huge Subscriber Offer: 60% OFF + BOGO at CTC Math
You must use that link for the discount. Homeschool Family Pricing Available.

Math is one of those subjects that your child either LOVES or HATES.

Sissy

My daughter HATES math.
VERY MUCH SO.

She does her math homework first thing in the morning.
Which if you know her, really means she dislikes it.

Some days Most days she bombards me with questions like,
WHY?
WHY?
WHY?
It’s TOO HARD!
(which isn’t a question)
And WHY?

She is not behind in math,
She might even be a tad ahead, but she really EARNS that position,
it most definitely doesn’t come naturally to her.

Bubba

My son, on the other hand, enjoys math.
He is a thinker.
a problem solver.
a riddler.

If you happen to be new,
and anywhere within 100 or so feet of him,
he might surprise you by pulling a brain teaser out of his pocket
and demand that you match wits to see who can solve it first.

Math is his favorite subject,
something he looks forward to,
and if it were up to him,
math would be the only subject of the day.

He says things to me like:

“Math is my favorite subject”

and

“If it were up to me, math would be the only subject of the day.”

:)

But, even though they are both so very different in their enthusiasm towards math,
they both really like CTC Math.

Which is good because CTC Math sent us a free subscription to try out their program and let our readers know what we thought.

So, are you interested in an online math program? Here’s the deal:

CTC Math

CTC Math is a supplemental online math program for K-12.

A Subscription to CTC Math Includes:
1,367 animated and narrated math lessons (VIDEOS!!!)
A bank of over 57,000 interactive questions
Diagnostic tests
Instant feedback to students and regular reporting to parents
Algebra, statistics, geometry, trigonometry, probability plus more

Here’s how all that looks:

2
Getting Started:

Essentially, you can start your child at any grade level and any topic that you want. Just choose your grade, choose your stream, and then choose a specific topic.

If you don’t know where to start, each topic includes an optional comprehensive test, and an instant report you can view to diagnose problem areas.

I actually already know that Bubba needs to work on Statistics and Probability so I put him in 3rd grade; Statistics; Graphs and Charts.

Clicking on the topic takes me directly to the video lesson.

1

The Lessons:

Each video lesson is under 10 minutes long. (Can I get an Amen?) They are simple, easy to understand, and usually include interactions within the lesson.
Children can pause, stop, rewind any of the videos on their own. Big buttons. Real simple like.

Not to mention the teacher is Australian.
(Seriously, what kid can ignore a math teacher that sounds like The Crocidile Hunter?)

Untitled-19

Follow Up Questions:
Direcly after the video lesson, children complete the follow up questions. This is all done online and often involves click and drag positioning to answer some questions. I want to point this out because the response of the actual graphics is fantastic.

Untitled-16

I’m very impressed with how easy the tools and objects on the screen move around and respond to user interaction. They also make sense. (Which, if you’ve ever sent your children to a state required math assessment, you know how frustrating bad computer graphics and response can be.) CTC Math is crisp and easy to work with, there are no technical frustrations and children are free to focus on learning.

Untitled-18

Reports:

After taking the required questions, children are given an immediate report and it’s easy to visually see where the child missed the mark. For example, in Bubba’s report above I can easily determine that my child understands the concept of picture graphs, but mixed up the numbers. I can see that I don’t need to keep teaching pictographs, but I need to give him tools to SLOW down and carefully approach math problems so we don’t make simple mistakes. Additional reports are saved in the parent login area so you can always access and pull up you’re children’s work.

Avatar

Pros:

Family Pricing, CTC Math has competetive homeschool pricing. Even Better: CTCMath is offering our readers 60% off + BOGO, which means when you purchase a year subscription, you’ll actually get two years!!

Optional Testing. I can’t tell you how many online programs MAKE you test, or email the administrator to change the grade level of your children. With CTCMath comprehensive tests are offered for each subcategory, but they are NOT required to begin working at a particular grade level…..which leads me to my next pro:

Ability to bounce from grade level to grade level. CTC Math covers Kindergarten through Trigonometry. This is a helpful feature if you have a child who struggles with fractions but is amazing with division. You as the parent can assign them to different grade levels to continually build on their knowledge without any lapses.

Reports are Easy to understand. You can easily see what areas your children are proficient in, or what areas they need more instruction with.

No Visual Distractions. It’s not gimmicky. There are no flashing ads, no “design your own” avatars, and all that jazz. It’s simple. With a highly distractable child, this is something I can really appreciate.

NO CD’s!! Video lessons are streaming online, which keeps things simple. No disks to loose, scratch, or turn into flying saucers in the middle of a lesson.

Cons:

I actually don’t have any cons for CTCMath. (is that possible?) I WAS planning on complaining that the lessons weren’t available on our mobile devices, but I just pulled out my Kindle Fire to find that CTCMath is compatible with iPad and Android devices. I didn’t even have to download anything, it just pulled right up using HTML5 instead of Flash.

That was pretty impressive.

And if you still have any doubt, you can try CTCMath for free.
None of that credit card baloney either, just enter your email and you’ll immediately be able to take quite a few lessons…..see for yourself why over 200,000 students use this program.

If you do, let me know what you think below!

Homeschool Giveaway! Essential Skills Advantage

August 12, 2013 By Valerie Mcclintick 54 Comments

EssentialSkillsGiveawayButt

It’s time for an AWESOME giveaway from our sponsors at Essential Skills Advantage!

If you haven’t ever heard of this company, now is a great time to learn more.
With the school year coming up you might be undecided about a few of your curriculum choices,
or you might wonder how to sneak in a little extra practice in a certain area.

Essential Skills is an online educational program used with over 300,000 students and growing.

EssentialSkillsAbout

For over a decade, Essential Skills has been providing schools in the USA and Canada with high-quality educational software for grades K-6. Our programs are designed to motivate students and improve their grades. Now, for the first time, we’re introducing these tools at home.

The Essential Skills Advantage is an affordable and convenient alternative to tutorial service providers. Our programs are based on leading educational research and best practices. Course offerings include: Math, Reading & Language, Science, Geography, and English Language Learning.

The Essential Skills programs are currently being used in over 20,000 schools throughout North America and continue to gain popularity with educators and kids alike. Over 300,000 students have benefited from Essential Skills.

EssentialSkillsCourseTP

EssentialSkillsINdividualSk

ReviewButton

Essential Skills Advantage set us up with an All Access Student Plan so we could try out their program!

I took plenty of screen shots so you can get an idea of how it works:

Getting Started:
When you first join Essential Skills Advantage your children will see all of their courses. Since we have the All Access Plan, we have a complete grade level of courses. If you sign your child up for an individual course you’d only see that one listed.

EssentialSkillsClasses

Taking the Pretest:
For each of your courses, children will need to take a pretest so that the program will assign them to the correct level of assignments. These pretests are pretty extensive, they take a while to go through and I would definitely recommend doing only one a day.My son could only get through about 20% of the test before he was loosing interest and spending less time answering correctly.
Thankfully, you can Save your progress and return at a later time.

PreTest

Taking Lessons:
After you complete your pretest the computer automatically configures your lessons to best suit the areas your children need to work on. Children can choose which subject they want to learn. Each subject includes an overview so you can easily see what’s covered.

Grammar1

Here are some screenshots of a grammar lesson:

Grammer4

(clicking “rule” will take you to an explanation)

Grammer3

Grammer2

With each lesson your child takes, they will earn a star on the their chart.

Grammer5

Grammer6

Tracking your Children:
This is one aspect of the program that I’m really excited about. It awesome to be able to check in on a particular subject and see how well your child is doing in that area. I can really appreciate that these reports include the number of attempts and the amount of time spent on the problem. The reports provide you with very specific data on what subjects you might want to review with your child.

EssentialSkillsScores

Homeschool

PROS:
While the pretests are long, I appreciate that they are individualized by subject. One of the reasons we homeschool is because my children are advanced in one area and struggling in another. This system makes sure they are at the level they should be in each subject.

I appreciate the way the program is offered to homeschooling families. You can choose individual courses or all access. You can even choose the All Access Family Plan for up to 3 children. Just having the choice is nice, because we homeschoolers love to customize our children’s learning experience.

I’m also excited that so many different subjects are covered. I can definitely see putting this program to the test on those Mommy’s sick days….you know, those days when the kids spend the day Homeschooling on Netflix? Well, now they can at least cover the core subjects without any excuse!

CONS:
Slower loading time. It might be my connection, I live on the outskirts of town, and my internet speed is only so-so. It’s not painstakingly slow, but when you have a child (with ADHD) every single second seems like eternity to them. Then again that’s free life skills training right? He hasn’t complained, he’s happy to have computer time, I only bring it up for transparencies sake.

Price The price of the All Access Plan would definitely be a prayerful purchase for our family. However, Essential Skills Advantage is offering you a special coupon code that will take 75% off the price of the course of your choice. You can even use that on the All Access Plan or even the All Access Family Plan. Which means you could get this core program for three children for less then $75. That’s an amazing deal, and if you only have one kiddo, the All Access Plan is still just $33. An Individual Course (like Math, or Science) would only be about $13 for the entire year. But you will need to use this exclusive coupon code: TCC75

Summer Fun School

May 20, 2013 By Valerie Mcclintick Leave a Comment

We no longer technically homeschool over the Summer.
Ever since joining a local charter school we’ve decided to try and stick to the Monday-Friday, September through June schedule, but that doesn’t mean we don’t learn over the Summer.

If you’re looking for some simple ways to encourage learning over the Summer break here is a list of some Summer Fun School activities:

Lately I’ve noticed that my children have been enjoying skits and plays. Sometimes in their Language Arts curriculum or with certain books they are encouraged to act out a story and they are so very happy to do so. I recently looked up some fun 2-3 person skits on Puppet Resources and thought I might keep a few on hand for those “boring” Summer days.

Summer of Photography!
Why not take your kids and your camera out on a daily hike with a goal. ABC’s in photos. Only pink things. Or have children arrange vacation photos with their own captions. There are some great ideas at Montessori-Now for using photography over the Summer.

penpals

Want to keep kids writing over the Summer?
Enlist a willing friend or family member to become Silly Story Penpals!
Initiate the conversation with your children writing a silly story then asking the penpal to return the
favor. This is a great way to sneak in some creative writing, penmanship, and basic language arts skills, all while having fun.

Space Crafts and Activities
Summer is a great time to learn astronomy! From Summer nights spent looking at the stars, to the Persides meteror showers in August, you’ll find some great Summer opportunities to learn all about our universe. We actually use this Meteror Shower Ap to keep track and be reminded of them.
If you really want to get into Space over the Summer, consider investing in a telescope, or participating in a local stargazer event.

museum

Don’t forget about your local and semi-local museums!
Here is a list of US Museums by State.
There are so many wonderful exhibits to see, and it’s a great way for children to get excited about learning.

Chalk Pastels
This Summer we’ve ordered A Simple Start in Chalk Pastels, which includes 45 step by step tutorials. I plan on pulling it out whenever we hear “I’m bored,” or “It’s too hot,” ect…
Maybe by the end of Summer we’ll have a nice collection of artwork to start the year off.

doodle art bible

If you’re not looking for a full on set of art lessons,
why not print out a few of these adorable Color-in-Quotes!
A set of pretty markers and a stack of these will go a long way on a HOT Summer afternoon!

summer reading chart

Summer Reading!
Here is a handy printable your children can use to keep track of their Summer Reading. We laminated ours and used a dry erase marker. A special follow up worksheet is included as well. At the start of Summer make a goal, and when it is reached have an ice cream night with the family!

Summer Science Activities
Our ES brought some fun Soda bottle science activities last week, and the kids were loving every minute. They made tornados, dancing raisins, and even a shooting rocket bottle.

These science books include so many different science experiments you can do with your kiddos over the Summer, and they won’t even realize they are learning!

I’m sure there are TONS of other ideas out there,
I love how relaxed learning can be during the Summer!

Printable Character Chart

March 27, 2013 By Valerie Mcclintick 15 Comments

CharacterChart
Character.
It is sooooooo hard to teach.

Harder then math. Harder then science.
Definitely harder then P.E.

Character is on my TOP list of reasons why I homeschool.
Character is a teach by example sort of subject.

(ouch)

Can I just say without any reserve that the Character has been lacking around here lately.

(yes….I do realize what I’m admitting to here.)

And more honestly,
our house has turned upside down with more Negative then Positive reinforcement lately.

Obviously, that is not going to work for very long.

So in an effort to turn things on the positive,
I made these little Character Charts:

I put the children’s names on them, and then surrounded them with positive behaviors
and virtues that (I’m hoping) we will see through out the week.

HOW IT WORKS:
The charts will hang up in the classroom where everyone has access to them.
They are meant to be colored in, one letter at a time,
when the child displays that positive character trait.

So anytime anyone sees Charlie being peaceful they would color
in one letter of the word peaceful.
Make sense?

RULES:
You can’t fill in your own letters
You can’t persuade anyone to fill in a letter for you.
Try your best to SECRETLY fill in a letter for others, don’t let them see you!

Younger Siblings Rule:
When you catch the babies/tot doing good, PRAISE, PRAISE, PRAISE them by naming the character trait and walking them over to fill in the letter.

I’m hoping my children will get excited to see the new colored in letters each day.
Maybe discussions of, “Hmmm, I wonder what I got that being peaceful letter for?”
or “Boy, I don’t have any helpful letters….”

I’m sure by the end of the month we will all know what character traits we are struggling with.

Even Mommy.

Yup. Giving myself the letter “b” for that move.

Wish me luck!

DIY Stained Glass Coloring Pages

March 26, 2013 By Valerie Mcclintick Leave a Comment

So last week, while browsing around Pinterest,
I found this cheepo way to make DIY stained glass coloring pages.

And the timing couldn’t have been better.
(As my children had just tore out the very last page in their stained glass coloring book)

So I thought I’d give it a try to see if we got a comparable result:

Not bad right?

The sun kept popping in and out from behind the clouds, so this shot is a tad more “cloudy”
but you can see the DIY on the left and the purchased on the right.
So the DIV version is not EXACTLY the same as a prepaid sheet,
but it is way cheaper then buying a set of pages or even a stack of vellum to print on.

Plus you can really turn ANY coloring page into a stained glass project.
And what kiddo does’t love to see their own creations on display?

Just in case you wanted to try out this method for yourself,
I whipped up some beautiful Easter pages that would look great as stained glass.

Head on over to our main site for the printable pages and the full tutorial!

Blessings,

Valerie
