Summer Reading for Middle School

June 6, 2016 By Valerie Mcclintick Leave a Comment

MiddleSchoolSummerReading

Recently, I designed a Summer Reading and a Summer Writing Challenge for my younger kiddos, but my older children were feeling a bit left out.  So today I whipped up a simple Summer Reading Challenge for Middle School grades.  Because their book sizes are so varied, I thought it might be better to issue a page number challenge rather then a book number challenge.  So the goal is to read 5,000 pages (of grade appropriate material) over the Summer Break.  Many books include grade recommendations on the back, and you can show children how to research online to see whether or not the book they chosen is grade appropriate.  Children keep track of the book title, author and then umber of pages they have read.  Hint: During a 90 day Summer Break, 5,000 pages equals about 55 pages a day…..so it is roughly an hour of reading each day.

I’m going to reward my children with a special treat at our local ice cream shop when they finish their charts!

Printable Character Chart

March 27, 2013 By Valerie Mcclintick 15 Comments

CharacterChart
Character.
It is sooooooo hard to teach.

Harder then math. Harder then science.
Definitely harder then P.E.

Character is on my TOP list of reasons why I homeschool.
Character is a teach by example sort of subject.

(ouch)

Can I just say without any reserve that the Character has been lacking around here lately.

(yes….I do realize what I’m admitting to here.)

And more honestly,
our house has turned upside down with more Negative then Positive reinforcement lately.

Obviously, that is not going to work for very long.

So in an effort to turn things on the positive,
I made these little Character Charts:

I put the children’s names on them, and then surrounded them with positive behaviors
and virtues that (I’m hoping) we will see through out the week.

HOW IT WORKS:
The charts will hang up in the classroom where everyone has access to them.
They are meant to be colored in, one letter at a time,
when the child displays that positive character trait.

So anytime anyone sees Charlie being peaceful they would color
in one letter of the word peaceful.
Make sense?

RULES:
You can’t fill in your own letters
You can’t persuade anyone to fill in a letter for you.
Try your best to SECRETLY fill in a letter for others, don’t let them see you!

Younger Siblings Rule:
When you catch the babies/tot doing good, PRAISE, PRAISE, PRAISE them by naming the character trait and walking them over to fill in the letter.

I’m hoping my children will get excited to see the new colored in letters each day.
Maybe discussions of, “Hmmm, I wonder what I got that being peaceful letter for?”
or “Boy, I don’t have any helpful letters….”

I’m sure by the end of the month we will all know what character traits we are struggling with.

Even Mommy.

Yup. Giving myself the letter “b” for that move.

Wish me luck!

Math Master Printable Chart

May 31, 2012 By Valerie Mcclintick 5 Comments

Just popping in with an easy Summer School FREEBIE for you!

My children recently finished up State testing,
and while they each passed (phew)
one of the things I noticed was the lack of SPEED
with which they attacked the math portion of the test.

And can I just say for a moment that:
It’s wonderful to be allowed to WATCH your children take a test!

btw-That is NOT my kid taking a test.
That is a picture of a kid taking a test that I found on the internet.
I certainly would not hound my children with a poloroid moment mid-test.

But there is really something to be learned about (unobtrusively) watching
the way your child processes and manages everything you’ve (hopefully) drilled
into their little brain.

So I was excited for such an opportunity, and as I saw focus and progress,
and clicking of next pages I was reassured in my ability to actually teach at home.
It was great.

HOWEVER.

When the Math portion of the test came around…
I was a tad disappointed to see lots of finger counting and (gasp) calculator clicking
(which apparently they allow for some reason now? Was it always like this?)
Ack! I was cringing. It was a classic pride before the fall double whammy.

Doubts crept in.
Didn’t they already learn this?
I know I taught them this.
I thought we had it covered?
Must we go back again?

So this Summer we will AGAIN be reviewing Math facts.

I found THIS GREAT WEBSITE for printing up some drill sheets.

And I whipped up this Math Master Printable Chart.
(There is no better motivation then positive/intrinsic I say!)

We’ll be attacking this DAILY, with the goal of increasing ACCURACY & SPEED
and WE WILL PREVAIL!

And TELL me I’m not the only one here!

What have you taught your children over and over and over and….

(you know…..besides not to Hit their brothers)
