Keeping Christ at the Center of Easter

April 3, 2020 By Valerie Mcclintick Leave a Comment

Easter is on its way, and the stores are full of chocolates and bunnies. As Christians, we know what Easter is really about. We want our children to focus on Christ’s resurrection, not just the candy. Here are some fun ways to keep Christ at the center of your Easter celebrations.

Be More Christ-Like Ideas

At the Last Supper, Jesus did something amazing. He bent down and washed the apostles’ feet.

You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am.

If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet,

you also ought to wash one another’s feet.

For I have given you an example,

that you should do as I have done to you.

Most assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master;

nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him.

If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.

John 13: 13-17

Washing the feet of others has become a symbol of service and devotion. Why not try it in your home? You can pair up family members to wash each other’s feet or have each person wash everyone else’s.

You can also do a metaphorical foot washing. Place the name of each family member in a hat or box. Have each member draw one name. Now each person has to decide how he or she will serve their assigned family member. This could be a fun game like “secret Santa.” Or you can serve each other openly. However, you chose to “wash each other’s feet” the point is to serve each other in big ways out of love.

Backyard Easter Scavenger Hunt Game

We all know about Easter Egg Hunts. This is a fun, biblical twist. Print out scripture verses on slips of paper. Fill plastic Easter eggs with the verses. Hide the eggs throughout your backyard. Now it is time to find the eggs! This can be done together or individually. For individual hunts, use color coded eggs to make sure everyone finds all the verses.

Finding the eggs is only the beginning, though. Now it is time for the scavenger hunt. You can hide small toys, candies, or tokens that correspond to each verse or have the children get creative. See who can find a symbol for each verse in your yard.

How to Make Resurrection Rolls

Resurrection Rolls are more than just another Easter treat. They tell the story of the burial and resurrection of Christ. These are easy to make and very kid-friendly. You will need a roll of refrigerator rolls or croissants, marshmallows, melted butter, and cinnamon.

  1. Lay out all the ingredients and wash everyone’s hands.
  2. Pour some cinnamon on a plate and place it next to the melted butter.
  3. Give each child a marshmallow. Tell them that this represents Jesus’ body that suffered to save us from our sins.
  4. Have each child dip and coat the marshmallow with butter. This symbolizes his mother and friends anointing Him with oil.
  5. Roll the buttered marshmallows in cinnamon. The cinnamon represents the spices that were mixed with the oil.
  6. Now give each child a roll or croissant. Stretch them out slightly but be sure not to rip them.
  7. Wrap the dough around each marshmallow, just like Jesus was wrapped in a burial shroud.
  8. Now place the wrapped marshmallows onto a baking sheet and put it in the oven. Tell the children about how Jesus was laid in a tomb that was sealed with a large rock. Close the oven door.
  9. It’s time to set the timer. Just like the centurions stood watch, the timer will make sure we don’t take them out too soon!
  10. When the rolls are ready, take them out and cut one open. The inside is empty, just like Jesus’ tomb.
  11. The rolls will be sweet inside. Remind the children how sweet it is to be forgiven of our sins.

Christ in Easter Ideas

Jesus asked us to spread the Good News to all the nations! Many people will not get to be with family this Easter. They are too sick or frail to be home. The current pandemic has made life even harder for those in the hospital and nursing homes. Most are not allowing visitors. But there is always hope for those who know and love Christ.

Easter Cross Bible Bookmarks

Send messages of hope to your local hospital or nursing home. Make cards, draw pictures, or simply handwrite an Easter card. Include your favorite verse about hope. Let those who feel forgot to know how much they are loved.

Easter Bible Verse Printables

EasterVerseCardsPin

One of our most popular Easter resources is our Easter Egg Bible Verse Cards for Kids.

There are 10 different cards each with their own memory picture and key scripture.  The cards are stored in a pocket that includes a checklist for children.

Recently, I received an email from one of our readers.  She had been sending these scripture eggs in care packages overseas as part of an outreach program.  She was printing the eggs and replacing the verses with scripture in each countries native language by gluing little squares over the top.  It was proving time consuming and she was in need of a blank version.

So I got to work and instead of a blank version, I made an editable version.  Well, okay I made both.

I just know that there are others of you out there who are looking for small, light weight encouragement items to send to your sponsored children, or to your missionaries and church plants and now you can customize a set in your language of choice.

Additionally, if you make a set do send the files back to share with others!

NOTE: You will need the LATEST Adobe Reader to use these, but it is very very simple, you just type in your verse in the blank boxes.

Last Minute Easter Baskets

April 24, 2011 By Valerie Mcclintick Leave a Comment

When I was a child, I had my very own Easter Bunny Basket.
It was handmade (in the 80’s) by the nursery worker at our local bowling alley.
It was a compliation of yarn, ribbon, and a plastic milk jug.

I’m pretty sure it’s long gone now, but here is a photo of the closest thing I could find online.

You can imagine how much I loved it.

And you can imagine how guilty I feel to admit that:

My children do not have Easter baskets.

gasp.

Why? you ask.

How could I have let that happen?

It’s a mixture between wanting their baskets to be keepsakes, keeping Christ in Easter, and just an overall lack of time.

(and a whole lot of procrastination)

…ahem

But that is all in the past, and this year, I was not about to let another Easter morning pass without baskets.

So I bought four identical baskets from Walmart,

And sewed little liners for them:

One for the girl:

And Three for the boys:

You can tell I din’t measure because they are kinda baggy

But for twenty minutes I’m pretty happy….All I did was sew the sides up a fat quarter and then make corners at the bottom:

Then I just added a strip of dotted fabric to make them all a bit similar:

And even though I didn’t have time to make them perfect, I’m glad we now have some!

Eventually I’d like to add a bit more customization for each kiddo,
maybe the first letter of their name or something to make it special for each child.

Any Ideas?

These would look really beautiful with the Naturally dyed Eggs we did last year!

A Hybrid Easter

April 4, 2010 By Valerie Mcclintick 4 Comments

IMG_1384
This year for the first time……..
We attempted to use Natural Dying techniques to color our eggs.

(And before you get all “eggy” and Easter Bunny…Pagan Fertility on me….I’ll have you know that my daughter….on her own accord prayed this evening that we would not get caught up in all the chocolate eggs tomorrow and forget what Easter is really about!)

Ha. She thinks she’s getting Chocolate!

(Doesn’t she know that at precisely midnight tonight her mother will be found scouraging the kitchen cupboards, for any kind of sweet morsel left over from Halloween? (A holiday we’ve also discussed at great lengths but that’s another post) Seriously, instead of writing this I should be pulling out the fridge and checking to see what kinds of goodies have fallen behind it over the last year…..lest the kids get only Easter eggs in their baskets. (Baskets that I haven’t found yet).

Anyway, back to the egg making.

So, having laid somewhat of a foundation with the wee ones, I thought a little Easter Egg fun wasn’t completly out of the question.

So this afternoon we scoured around the house for anything and everything that might leave a lasting color on our eggs. Here’s what we came up with:

BlueBerries for Grey/Blue:

IMG_1359

Orange Peels & Curry for Yellow:

IMG_1362

Coffee for Beige/Brown:

IMG_1368

Beets for Red/Pink:

IMG_1357

Okay, you got me.

I didn’t really have Beets in my fridge. Totally made an extra trip to the store for these….buy hey, we picked up some eggs while we were there, and those were completely necessary.

We had great fun all ALL afternoon making the different dyes and letting our eggs soak up the color! (Yes, we added vinager to make the color stay….we’re not complete doofs.) Okay, well we might have forgot it for part of the afternoon….but NOT the whole afternoon.

IMG_1385

For first timers, we had a blast, and the kiddos thought Mom was a flippin genius pulling out a trick like that.

(Kuddos to Me)

And then of course we helped the colors along a bit with those Natural little Tabs that you can pick up in the Organic Kits at the Whole Foods Store. You know the ones…..

IMG_1374

So here are the Natural Eggs (on the right) with the Hybrid Eggs (on the left):

IMG_1379

(Again….they are Hybrid because we added just a tad of those Natural Powders to our Natural Dyes)

All together they make a pretty Spring Basket:

IMG_1393

I think the Coffee Eggs are my Fav!

Anyone Else Use Natural Dyes this year? What worked….I’m jotting down notes for next year!

Handmade Easter Baskets

April 12, 2009 By Valerie Mcclintick Leave a Comment

I just found this amazingly simple tutorial for making you’re own felt Easter Baskets. I made a set for Sissy and Bubba in like 30 minutes, and I’m so excited to have something homemade that we can use for the years to come.

I just used a sheet of children’s craft felt (like you get in the kiddy craft isle at Walmart)

They’re small, but I think they’re just the right size for the amount of treats we give them anyway :) I think the’ll look even better when they’re filled up.

Instead of flowers like in the tutorial, I gave Sissy some butterflies,

and Bubba some palm trees. (Not very Eastery….but maybe he’ll remember the palm branches or something?)

Anyway, just thought I’d share in case anyone else is looking for some quick ways to add a little personality to their holiday traditions.

This might even be a project that I teach my daughter how to do, she just got a children’s sewing machine for her birthday…..Oh let the adventures begin!

Trick or Treat Alternatives

October 2, 2020 By Valerie Mcclintick Leave a Comment

After so many months of life being different, you may be looking for ways to bring some normalcy into your life. A hallmark of Fall is trick or treating with family and friends. However, as with most of 2020, this year Halloween will look a bit unusual. So what can you do to make this a fun time if you can’t do what you usually do? Here are 7 trick or treat alternatives for celebrating Halloween without the Trick or Treating part!

Cinnamon Sugar Roasted Pumpkin Seeds

Host a Small Get Together

If you are able and willing, bring the celebrating to you. Get together a small group of your closest friends or family. Host your party outdoors or in, either way it will be a treat. Here are some ways that you can make a small get-together into big fun:

  • Have a movie night with popcorn and movie-style candy boxes
  • Serve crazy, Halloween themed drinks. Check out these ideas!
  • Munch on fun Fall food like popcorn balls, caramel apples, or funnel cakes.
  • Play Fall themed games like these.

Create an Escape Room in Your Home

Want to make your party a total experience? Why not try creating an escape room in your home. It’s an exciting alternative to trick or treating. Escape rooms are action packed, family entertainment that will keep your mind active. Transport your family to a riveting adventure without leaving home. Here are some resources for planning your own escape room party at home.

  • DIY Escape Room Party at Home
  • How to Create a House Escape Room
  • WikiHow’s Build an Escape Room
  • How to Throw the Ultimate Escape Room Party at Home
  • Make Your Own Escape Room Challenge for Kids
  • Free Children’s Escape Room Plans

Virtual Escape Rooms

Perhaps you really want to play with family and friends. However, getting together is just not possible. Virtual escape rooms let anyone and everyone join in, restrictions or not! These games can be hosted over Zoom and offer exciting entertainment that makes you work together, even when you have to be apart. Here’s some of the best options for family online escape rooms:

  • Online Escape Rooms for the Family
  • Free Digital Escape Rooms
  • Digital Escape Rooms
  • How to Build a Digital Escape Room Using Google Forms

Hold a Virtual Costume Contest with Family and Friends

All dressed up and no where to go? Don’t let that fabulous costume go to waste. Host a virtual costume contest with family and friends. Have everyone dress up in their favorite costume, then create categories and prizes. Prizes can be mailed or a simple, printable certificate that can be sent over email. Next set a time to gather online and show off what you have. If full blown costumes are just too much, simplify but keep the fun. Some ideas for simplified contests are face painting contests, make-up contest, crazy hat contest, or best mask contest. This is the Best Facepaint kit, especially if you have sensitive skin.

Have a Candy Hunt Alternative to Trick or Treating

Trick or Treating is so much fun. The thrill of what each house is handing out. The excitement of counting and sorting your bounty. Oh, and let’s not forget about trading for your favorites. Just because you can’t go trick or treating, doesn’t mean you need to miss out on that annual fun! Have a candy hunt in your home or backyard. You could even set one up at a local park with a handful of friends.

This works the same way as an Easter egg hunt. Hide candy around the yard or house. You can hide individually wrapped candy or fill these adorable pumpkins with treats, pennies, or candy and hide where you want.

DIY Pumpkin Window Decorations

Host a Harvest Festival in Your Backyard

Make your backyard into a festival wonderland. A harvest festival doesn’t have to be overly elaborate or expensive. Set up stations that are easy to do without a lot of oversight. This is a fantastic alternative to trick or treating around the neighborhood. Here’s some station ideas:

  • Halloween or Fall temporary tattoos
  • Paint a mini pumpkin
  • Knockdown the cans
  • Plastic duck pond
  • Fall scavenger hunt
  • Craft station
  • Bob for apples
  • Cider and donuts
  • Backyard games center (think Bocce, volleyball, or crochet)
  • Decorate a candy bag
  • Pin the tail on the donkey
  • Egg and spoon races
  • Make your own mask
  • DIY games
Fall Art Projects for Kids

Compete in a Pumpkin Carving Contest at Home or Virtually

Put some skin in the game with a pumpkin carving contest. Like the costume contest, set a time and pick categories to compete in. These could be age-based or themes. Then have everyone make their pumpkin. Gather round in person at home or online to show off your masterpiece. Have an impartial judge participate to choose a winner. Take a picture, or screenshot, of each pumpkin and send it to all participants and add them to a PDF. Send it to participants as a keepsake of this unusual but exciting Halloween season.

Monthly Preschool Themes & Topics

January 23, 2020 By Crafty Team Leave a Comment

Preschoolers are naturally curious and excited to learn. You may be wondering what to teach your preschooler and when. A new year is here with 12 months of learning opportunities. One of the easiest ways to structure your schooling and still have plenty of room for fun is with preschool learning themes by month. Each learning theme gives you a topic to springboard off of. Add in crafts, stories to read, activities or experiments, and maybe even a field trip.

Using Preschool Learning Themes by Month

You may be wondering where to start with preschool curriculum planning. It can be overwhelming to fill a whole year with lessons that are engaging, fun, and  educational. This is where themes come in. By planning your month around a few or even one topic, you can be more direct in your lessons and not be looking for inspiration every day or week.

This style of teaching helps tie lessons together in a memorable way. Preschoolers can easily relate to these learning themes. They will be eager to learn more and participate in lessons. Best of all, it will be easier to incorporate play, imagination, and practical skills into your preschool day.

January:

Kick off the year by choosing from the following themes:

  1. The Calendar
  2. Snow and Ice
  3. Martin Luther King
  4. Hibernation
  5. Nursery Rhymes

February:

Stay warm this February with these sweet learning ideas:

  1. Love and Friendship
  2. Presidents
  3. Groundhog Day

Fine Motor Skills Activities for Preschool

February 25, 2019 By Valerie Mcclintick 1 Comment

If you have a preschool student who is in need of working on fine motor skills, you’ll want to provide them with numerous hands-on activities and development tools. These activities should provide students with the opportunity to use their small motor muscles while having fun learning.

Our monthly fine motor skills activity packs are filled with engaging resources, worksheets, activities, and games that build those small motor muscles for young students. If you have missed the prior months activity packs, not to worry, you can still pick them up in our TPT store here.

HUGE Brick Building Mat Mega Pack Available Here

April’s pack is filled with fun, thematic learning opportunities covering Weather, Earth Day, and Easter. NOTE: If Easter falls in March you can simply swap out the Butterfly & Frog theme from March for the two weeks of Easter in April. Everything is designed to coordinate and adapt to the changing holiday. Here is a peek inside our April Fine Motor Pack. For each of the themes, there are at least 14 activity pages described below:

Earth Day Fine Motor Skills Activities
  • GEOBOARD: Students use rubber bands to create the pictures on a geoboard. Each sheet features a letter of the alphabet alongside a thematic picture.
  • MAZES: Students solve the mazes and follow the prompts. Each page features thematic mazes alongside a tracing activity or prompt.
Weather Fine Motor Activities
  • TRACING: Students trace the pictures with colored pencils or fine tip markers. Each page features thematic content and prompts students to complete the pictures.
