Mushroom Science Printables

October 24, 2015 By Valerie Mcclintick Leave a Comment

MushroomPhoto

Fall is here and mushrooms are starting to pop up all over the place!

One of our favorite Fall activities to to go on a mushroom hunt to see how many different kinds of mushrooms we can find on our property.

Obviously, I talk with my children about safe handling of wild mushroom

(i.e. DO NOT EAT, LET MOM PICK etc….)

Even then, I wear gloves and am very careful not to touch my eyes, nose, mouth etc…..I don’t know if this is really necessary, but I fell better doing it so that’s that.

MushroomPhoto2

Mushrooms make fantastic science specimens for children of all ages.

That’s why today I’ve released a set of eight different Mushroom science notebooking pages, worksheets, labeling charts, activity sheets and life cycle resources you can use to study mushrooms with your own children.  If you don’t have access to mushrooms in your neighborhood you might consider going on a nature walk at the park, or even purchasing a mushroom from the grocery store.  Additionally, there are lots of Mushroom Farm Kits you can find online if you wanted to extend this into a horticultural unit study as well.

AppleCardsHeader

I know so many of you are teaching your Autumn themes right now so these apple printables should fit in nicely with your units.

I made two different versions of these printables, one is black and white, and the other features each respective part colored in.

There are many ways to use these

  • Cut apart the picture from the name to make a matching game
  • Provide children with blank versions to color in
  • Staple together with a red construction paper cover to make a minibook

It’s Fall.

Well, almost.

It sure feels like Fall here in Southern Oregon.

The rain is back, and the trees are starting to turn colors.

It’s been an much needed break from the 105 degree weather, and the smoky fire skies.

Fall is a great time to involve children with hands on science projects.

Today I have a fun set of printables you can use to study those beautiful Fall Leaves!

Parts of an Apple Printables

September 6, 2015 By Valerie Mcclintick Leave a Comment

ApplePartsHeader2

With Fall on the horizon I thought it would be a great time to start working on some Apple resources. Going apple picking has been a favorite activity for our family, and it provides wonderful opportunities for real life learning with some impromptu discussions.

Conversations at the apple farm stem from varieties of apples, tree grafting, cross pollination, bee populations, parts of an apple and so much more.

Today I drew up some simple worksheets and activities you can use with young children to learn the parts of an apple.  There are charts, notebooking pages, coloring pages, labeling worksheets and even a cut and paste activity.   Use these alongside a real apple that has been cross sectioned in half.

Parts of an Apple Printables are available free at our sister site HomeschoolClipart.com, where you can also download the apple clipart to make your own teaching resources!

Periodic Table Printables

June 13, 2015 By Valerie Mcclintick 1 Comment

FreeChartFix

If you’ve been following me on facebook you know I’ve been working on this project for past couple of weeks.  It’s taken HOURS upon HOURS but I’m finally ready to share this printable with you!

I created this Periodic Table Chart because I wanted something colorful and EASY to read after printing. For some reason everything I printed out online either came out blurry or the letters were too small for my old eyes to read….even with glasses.

So this chart is print friendly and FREE for a limited time!

PeriodicEBookLarge

BuyNowPeriodic Table of the Elements Activity Pack

I was so inspired by how this turned out, I went ahead and created a handful of games and resources that could be used alongside this colorful chart.

Here’s a sneak peek inside:

Charts

I’ve included a handful of reproducible charts:

  • Full Color Periodic Table Chart (8.5 x 11)
  • B&W Periodic Table Chart (8.5 x 11)
  • A3 Size Color Periodic Table Chart (11 x 17)
  • A3 Size BW Periodic Table Chart (11 x 17)

Worksheets

Symbols

There are a few worksheets and Fill in Charts:

  • Fill in the Blank Symbols Worksheet
  • Fill in the Name /Atomic Mass/Number Worksheet
  • Blank Periodic Table in Color
  • Blank Periodic Table in B&W
  • Symbol Stumper Worksheet

Bingo3

Flashcards

Boggle

And of course I made a variety of  Cards and Games:

  • Element Letter Tiles
  • Element Fact Cards
  • Element Boggle Gameboard
  • 8 different Element Bingo Cards
  • 8 Element Bingo Cards with Symbols Only

ElementTilesPrint

One of my most favorite parts of this activity pack are the Element Tiles……all 118 of them!

They are just under 1″ square and can coordinate with the Bingo and Boggle games shown above but they can also be used to encourage students to make words:

ElementTiles

Or you could creatively cut them into cute bookmarks

ElementCutting

Or children could use them to reassemble the periodic table, or…….play I have who has…..or……

The possibilities are really endless with these once you start thinking creatively!

PeriodicEBookLarge

You can purchase Periodic Table of the Elements Activity Pack  in our eStore for only $5.

I’ve priced it this low because I too have a homeschool budget and I know how hard it can be to squeeze eveything into it :)

In fact, most of the items in our eStore are $5 and under for this reason!

Apologia Fever Baby!

January 8, 2013 By Valerie Mcclintick 5 Comments

So over Christmas break we made a semi-BIG curriculum change.

We completely swapped out our science curriculum
(previously: Truth in Science) for Apologia Science.

Now, don’t get me wrong here,
I still love Truth in Science.
I am so very fond of the Christ centered worldview presented throughout the program.
There was really nothing wrong with the program.
We had lots of fun learning about animal classification,
plants and trees. But…

We just have been so taken with notebooking lately.
We found ourselves straying a bit from our Science lessons and
creating our own notebook adventures.

So, I finally made the call to switch over to Apologia Science
which has pre-bound notebooking elements available.

Oh Happy Day.

This is our very first Apologia product.
(can you believe that?)

And while I always find that I am in LOVE with every curriculum that I purchase
(at least for the first half of the year *snicker*)
I’m really thinking that Apologia is going to make it the Long Term at our house.

There is just no substitute for pre-planned daily lessons,

pre-bound spiral notebooks,

LAPBOOKING elements,

and multi-level accommodations.

And no, this is not a review for Apologia,
just sharing the excitement over a new addition to our classroom.

(Though if you’re looking for a great price on Apologia products,
do check out our sponsors, Hearts at Home Curriculum!
They offer 30% Apologia EVERYDAY!
)

Anyway, I love that more and more curriculum publishers
are incorporating multi-level teaching options and notebooking supplements,
it makes it so much easier for us homeschool moms!

Isn’t it fun making mid-year changes?

Fungus….Ewwwwwe!

November 9, 2012 By Valerie Mcclintick 5 Comments

Even though we’re mid Fall,
recently I’ve been noticing lots of different colors pop up in the yard.

So today,
as crisp and cold as it was,
we donned our hats and gloves,
and headed outside for a small nature walk.

We brought cameras, a small rubbermaid bucket
and we quickly captured Fall life all around us.
They were all so pretty that we spent all our camera batteries just taking photgraphs!

Some Fall FUNgus for you:

You can imagine how excited the children were as they found each new specimen.

We immediately took off for the library and found this wonderful book
called, Mushrooms of North America and it was filled with beautiful photographs
and information about each different kind of mushroom.

Over the next week, we will be notebooking in our journals about the variety of fungus in our area.

How fun that we can just step outside and marvel at God’s creation.
So glad we got Math worked out so we can have some more days like today!

A Post about Poop. (Animal Poop)

June 20, 2012 By Valerie Mcclintick 6 Comments

So recently my oldest boy has become fascinated with poop.

Our mornings are spent hiking around the house looking for signs of the previous nights visitors.

We take photos and document what we find.

It’s like CSI for animal poop.

Sometimes we recognize right away what we’re dealing with.
But most times we take photos, load them up to the CPU and
spend our afternoons comparing photos of animal scat.

We even picked up this handy book at a recent homeschool curriculum sale.

We’re starting to think we’re experts.

However. We’ve found a couple that have stumped us.
(read: we disagree upon)

And since everyone was so helpful in identifying
the crazy bug we found last month we are reaching out for some scat identification help.

So can you help?

Background information: We live in a forested area in Southern Oregon.
Lots and lots of forest, lots of deer and a few turkey. We don’t have cats or dogs (yet) but it’s possible we had stray visitors from neighbors down the way.

Scat #1
Found in our yard this morning.
Some whitish type fur or something too.
Pictured slightly smaller then real life.
(guess: I’m pretty sure this is a stray cat, but the boy says coyote.)

Scat #2
Found in more woodsy area near our house.
Shown at about half size.
Absolutely NO SMELL.
Please don’t ask how I know this
(guess: large dog? smushy deer? usually we see the pile of pellets….hmmmm.)

Scat #3
Found practically on our back porch railing. Close to actual size.
(guess: bird family?)

So there you have it folks.

A post about poop.

What do you think?

In which I spill my Dirt….

June 4, 2012 By Valerie Mcclintick 5 Comments

Literally.

I am spilling dirt everywhere.

Or…more accurately: Future dirt.

Cause it’s not really dirt yet.

It’s grass.

And leaves.

And some of this stuff.
(cause I’m just a beginner)

And water.

Good dirt takes time.

So we’ll wait

Please pray that I don’t end up with the smelly horse sludge!

Do you compost? Got any tips -or- Smelly horse sludge stories?
