Pumpkin Printables

Pumpkin Unit Study

If you love all things fall and harvest, like beautiful imperfect round pumpkins there are many wonderful ways to incorporate them into your homeschool routine. Pumpkins can be turned into math, science, and history lessons, but also so much more. For a pumpkin unit study, you really need no special supplies or expensive curriculum, just a few pumpkins and some basic items you already have around the house.

Pumpkin Math

Grab a ruler, a scale, and a flexible measuring tape. Bring home several pumpkins or head to the pumpkin patch with them and work on some math skills.

  • Measure the height, width, and circumference of several pumpkins. Weigh pumpkins on a scale, remove the pulp and seeds and weigh them separately.
  • Have younger children place pumpkins in a line in order of largest to smallest and reverse. Cut open a pumpkin and count the seeds.
  • Once your pumpkin is cut open measure the amount of seeds vs. pulp.
  • Cut a small pumpkin in half, then quarters, then eighths to introduce or reinforce fractions with your child.
  • Use pumpkin seeds as manipulatives for counting, skip counting, grouping, creating arrays, use a fine tip sharpie to write numbers on clean dry seeds to use to create math problems.

Label the Parts of a Pumpkin

For this hands-on activity, you just need toothpicks and a bit of cardstock. Cut cardstock in small 1”x2” squares. Write the parts of a pumpkin on each piece of cardstock- stem, seeds, pulp, skin, and ribs.

Tape each piece to a toothpick. Cut pumpkin open or in half and have them stick the label in the correct place, hands-on fun is much more memorable than a worksheet!

However, if you’d rather not label an actual pumpkin, I don’t blame you one bit! You can still work on labeling and identification when you use our free Parts of a Pumpkin labeling worksheet. The set includes a Coloring Page, Notebooking Page, Chart, Labeling Sheet and a Cut and Paste Activity. You can also grab the pumpkin clipart to use within your own teaching resources, just be sure to read the Terms of Use first.

Cinnamon and Sugar Roasted Pumpkin Seeds

An easy pumpkin recipe is a great way to enjoy a hands-on activity for math, science, and reading skills. Recipes help children learn to follow directions, introduces them to fractions, scientific reactions, and more.

You will need:

  • ¾ cup Pumpkin seeds
  • 2 teaspoons butter
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon or pumpkin spice
  • Preheat oven to 300 degrees.
  • Remove the seeds from your pumpkin.
  • Wash well, drain in a strainer and remove all bits of pumpkin pulp.
  • Dry seeds well.
  • Toss in a bowl with melted butter, sugar, and cinnamon.
  • Spread in a single layer on a baking sheet.
  • Bake for 25 minutes.
  • Allow to cool then store in a container with a tight-fitting lid.
  • A delicious treat to enjoy while learning all about pumpkins!

Quick Facts About Pumpkins:

  • In Colonial America they sliced to top off the pumpkin, removed the seeds and pulp then filled it with milk, spices, and honey, They then baked it right over hot ashes to make the first pumpkin pies!
  • Pumpkins are made of 90% water.
  • Every single part of the pumpkin is edible, even the stem.
  • Pumpkin is considered a fruit, mainly due to its seeds.

Decorating pumpkins this year but want an educational spin on it? Paint your pumpkin like a globe, label the oceans and continents. Have older children label additional details.

DIY Pumpkin Window Clings

Fall is a great time to start a few new art projects with your kids. We have a great variety of Fall Leaf Art Projects for kids, that are sure to be a hit in your classroom. However, if you’re looking for a lasting project, one that you can hang up year after year, then this free pumpkin window cling tutorial is for you!

[adthrive-in-post-video-player video-id=”1w0DK2EH” upload-date=”2019-10-25T21:23:26.000Z” name=”DIY Pumpkin Window Art” description=”Make Your Own Fall Window Art with this simple technique! “]

If this is your first time making your own window clings, then you’ll want to prepare a few things first. Each window cling is made on top of a sheet of plastic. The least expensive way to do this is to run a blank laminating sheet through your laminator. That way students each have their own plastic canvas. The plastic sheets can be reused again and again, so once you make enough for your students you can save them for your next project.

Materials:

Pumpkin Template

Window Paint Set

Laminating Sheets

Laminator

Step 1:

After preparing your plastic, place it over your pumpkin template and tape it to a piece of cardboard. With the cardboard backing, you can easily move your project without wrecking the wet paint.

Step 2:

Choose a few colors to outline each of the pumpkins. You might set the outlines aside to dry just a bit if you don’t want them to blend with the interior colors. When doing this project with younger students, you might already have these outlines prepped for students to fill in.

Step 3:

Use the paints to fill in the individual sections of the pumpkin. This is a great time to get creative with rainbows, blending, etc.

Step 4:

You can experiment with different color blocking in each section. Place various colors with random patches and blend them together. Here is a look at how I completed the first three pumpkins:

Step 5:

Use a variety of colors to make a fun set of pumpkins. If you have a “Clear” paint you can use it to create some fun pumpkins as those sections will dry as transparent. In the picture above I’ve used the “Clear” paint for the jack-o-lantern, and the outline of the middle pumpkin. Once you have your pumpkins how you want them, set them aside overnight (or longer) to dry.

Step 6:

Here is how the pumpkins will look in the morning, once they are dry. The colors will have darkened up a bit, but don’t worry, once the light shines through them they will brighten right up.

Step 7:

Carefully peel back the edges of the pumpkins to remove them from the plastic sheet. It should peel back very easily so if you feel a tug, it could be a part of the pumpkin that is not completely dry. Go slow and make sure it’s dry before continuing.

Here is how the pumpkin will look once removed from the plastic. This is one of the pumpkins I used transparent paint as the outline.

And here is how the pumpkins look when placed on a sunny window! The light shines right through them and adds some fall color to your room.

How cute do they look hung up together….instant happy!

You can peel and restick these homemade window clings over and over again until you get them just how you like them. To store them until next year, place them back on the plastic and file away in a manila folder.

You can use this window cling tutorial with any template you like and design your own window art for the entire year of decorations. If fact, if you like this project, you can try our stained glass hummingbird art project next.

Over the years, the Pumpkin Prayer has been one of our most popular Fall printables.  This year I was so excited to update this resource to include all new graphics in color and black and white.

pumpkinprayerprintableFor those of you now familiar with the Pumpkin Prayer, it is a simple visual prayer you can use with your children during October.  Many families will be carving pumpkins around Halloween and this is a special way you can connect each step of the pumpkin carving to an important heartfelt prayer for your children.   If you are involved in your children’s ministry this makes a great take home booklet to remind children to let their lights shine before men.  This free set is available in color or black and white and you can print it here on our sister site ChristianPreschoolPrintables.com

Pumpkin Prayer Printable

PumpkinPrayerPin

It’s October and pumpkins are everywhere.

What a perfect opportunity to get creative with your little ones and tie in a little devotional as well.

Quite a few years ago I created this Pumpkin Prayer Minibook, and it’s become one of our most popular resources on Christian Preschool Printables.

PumpkinPrayerCards

Today I thought I’d create a similar resource for older children or even young adults.

These Pumpkin Prayer Cards are perfect to pass out at youth Bible studies, place on your harvest tables, tie around pumpkins or insert in your bulletins.

Pumpkins & Gourds Photo Matching

September 24, 2014 By Valerie Mcclintick 2 Comments

PumpkinMatchingGame

One of my favorite things about Fall is all the beautiful pumpkins and gourds that start popping up at the stores.

I don’t know what it is about these bumpy squash that I love so much,

but my children love to dig in those big bins to find the most unusual ones.

Often these little pumpkins are on the expensive side,

so when I found these graphics I knew I had to get them and make a learning game to share with everyone!

PumpkinMatch

Print Pumpkins & Gourds Game Here

This set includes 12 different pumpkins and gourds for children to match up.

I recommend printing two sets on cardstock,

one for your gameboard and one for playing pieces.

This would also make a fun matching game to take with you to the pumpkin patch,

and let children have a Harvest Treasure Hunt!

You might even bring a few home for a hands-on matching center
