Lewis and Clark Unit Study Review

September 22, 2012 By Valerie Mcclintick 1 Comment

This year, in addition to continuting our Ancient History lessons,
we’re also going to be learning about the adventures of Lewis and Clark.

Just mentioning Lewis and Clark brings up so many thoughts and ideas for
hands-on crafts and activities. With such a rich topic, it gets a bit overwhelming for me…
and my brain spins a thousand miles an hour with plans!

Sometimes I’m able to get all my ideas in order.
But most often I spend more time “planning” our activities then actually “doing” them.

And while planning is fun…sometimes letting someone else plan can be funner.
(Yup. Funner. And I’m not appologizing)

There are so many different ways to purchase preplanned homeschool curriculum
but Unit Studies have been one of our favorites.

What is a Unit Study?
Why choose Unit Studies?

Homeschool Unit Studies

Homeschool Legacy has sent us their Once-a-Week Lewis and Clark Unit Study to review!

Here’s why a Once-a-Week Unit Study
method is so appealing to me:

It’s preplanned.
It’s organized.
It’s simple.
It’s inexpensive.
It’s hands-on.
It’s adaptable.

I’ve seen many different unit studies over the years, but Homeschool Legacy has some unique components to their products:

Here is what stands out about Once-a-Week Unit Study:

Biblically Centered. The beginning of each week contains a family devotional related to the following study. This is not a simple verse or bible story suggestion, this is a full page devotional that you can simply read together as a family. This was such a great surprise and I love that during this unit I don’t have to plan as much.

Includes American Heritage Girls and BoyScout badge completion.

This is really exciting news! I have a daughter in AHG, and three upcoming Boyscouts. I’ve often felt so guilty about not keeping track of our studies as dilligently as I could to fulfill badge requirements. Once-a-Week Unit Studies has all of the requirements laid out with suggestions for activities to meet them. Amazing, and obviously my daughter is excited to learn that she can “double-dip” her school studies with her badge studies.

Here are some other great features:

-Lots of FREE suggestions for resources, and many of the books are actually stocked in the library.

-Encourages use of a History Timeline

-Hands on activities and crafts! Oh the joy of crafts!

-Factual Information included in the study, and wonderful background history.

-Very organized and easy to follow schedule. You can use this as your core and build around it or use it as a supplement, it’s up to you.

-Additional book suggestions for non-readers and early readers so your little ones can join the study.

-Would be perfect alongside a Once-a-Week Co-Op

7 weeks, Grades 2-12
Boy Scout Merit Badge: Nature
American Heritage Girls Badge: Nature & Wildlife

You can read more about what’s included here.

Best of all Homeschool Legacy has 10 other Unit Studies!
Knights and Nobles and We The People look especially appealing to me!

If you’d like to read reviews on additional titles check out these reviews by other TOS Crew members here.

Disclaimer: I received a free download of Lewis and Clark Unit Study in exchange for my honest review of the product.

Patriotic Printables & Resources

September 11, 2012 By Valerie Mcclintick 4 Comments

Don’t you love teaching during an election year?
To be honest this is actually only my second election as a homeschooler.
But this year I’m really excited because this is the first year that I’ll have TWO students
that actually understand and grasp what I’m teaching.

So, I decided that now would be a great time to start a notebook on American Government.
I say “start” because I think this is going to be something we add to over the years.

One of my favorite things about notebooking is that you can open
up the notebook and add another sheet. It’s buildable knowlege.

The goal is that over the months and years the notebook will become familiar. Memorable even.
A visual representation for facts and truths that my children can draw upon in future years.

So to set-up the notebook I simply divided our binder into sections.

Obviously, I had to make printables….cause normal store bought dividers would NEVER do.

I also premade a few thematic minibooks for the children to fill in as we learn.

I used these resources:

Patriotic Shape Books

Let’s Learn Minibooks: Our Nation

For each section I thought I’d share some of the resources we’ll be adding in this year:

Constitution:

Printable Consitution Booklet

Amazing Constitution Printables from Joy Christian School

Founding Fathers Memory Game

Branches of Government Printable from Not So Wimpy Resources

Tons of Constitution Printables from this great Squidoo Lens

Executive Branch:

Presidential Nominee Fact Sheets

Paper White House Craft

White House Contact Information
so children can write a letter to the president.

Executive Branch Online Learning

Legislative Branch:

My Senators/My Representitives Fact Sheets

Last year we took a trip to our state capitol! I would highly recommend taking your children too!
We are including the photos, postcards, flattened pennies and other memorabilia in this section.

I hope we can expand this section when my children are older.

Judicial Branch

Hmmmm….a trip to the courthouse maybe?…

About our State:

Basic Facts about our State.

State Coloring Pages

State Flower/Bird/Animal Printables

State Coin

Mini Lapbook from Fortunately for You Books.

General Links:

Star Spangled Banner Printables

Patriotic Stationary from Busy Bee Kids Printables

Separation of Powers Flap Book

U.S. Symbols Matching Game

National Landmark File Folder Game

Fantastic List of MORE Election Resources from Spell Outloud

So that’s what we’ve got so far!
I’d love if you’d leave me any links or ideas for teaching about the Judicial branch,
that one has me creatively blocked for some reason :)

Can History be Engaging?

July 23, 2012 By Valerie Mcclintick 2 Comments

Warning: Soapbox Post Ahead
The printables and Free Curriculum Offers are at the bottom, scroll if you must.

So, what do you think?

CAN History be engaging?

If you would have asked me that 20 years ago,
I would certainly answer that with a big fat,

NO!

In fact,
I can even go further and tell you the specific night
that I decided that I HATED History.

H.A.T.E.D.
I would use a milder word,
but it really wouldn’t convey my actual (10 year old) feelings about History

(and yes, if you do the math that makes me 30)

Ahem…..

So, it was 20 years ago and
I vividly remember sitting in my uncomfortable wooden chair,
with my gigantic 5th grade (public school) History book propped on it’s spine.
The tendons between my thumb and pointer finger ached from holding
this monster of a book upright.
It was massive.

I was tired.
It was late,
Homework was due,
and I had more pages to read then I cared to count.

I tried my best to read. I willed myself to focus.
Self motivation kicked in; “You can do this!”
With heavy eyelids I read a full page.

Great!
Until I realized,
I hadn’t a CLUE what I just read.

(ever done this?)

Giggling at myself,
I started to read again…..this time outloud.

An hour passed, until I just couldn’t stomach any more.
I had no idea who these “historical” people were.
I had no personal frame of reference for where they were at in the world,
or even what period of time they existed in.
There were dates and numbers and facts,
graphs and arrows and lists of accomplishments.
I had no connection to any of it.

My brain was jumbled.

That was the moment I realized my complete hate disregard towards History.
(yes, I was a moody young girl and my feelings quickly swept from hatred to apathy)

I closed my book,
went to bed and
took an incomplete on my lesson the next morning.
No Joke.
Big fat ZERO.

And, now that I’ve written that all out,
It is almost sad to remember how much
I actually loathed History lessons.

I know better now.
I’ve actually become quite fond of History over the past few years,
Mostly from reading His-Story from an entirely different perspective,
but also out of a necessity to teach it to my own children.

I want my children to actually connect with the people and stories they read about.

This is one reason we will be using many living books
from our Heritage History Curriculum.

PSSST…..
If you are making a purchase at Heritage History use
coupon code: valerie7
It will give you the Spanish Empire Library FREE
with any Curriculum CD purchase! Ends 10/31/12Click Here for more details

So mostly I’ll be assigning these living books during independent reading time,
but for some of the titles I’ll be following up the reading time with
actual assignments. It is for those times that I made a set of Notebooking pages:

notebooking living books

And of course I couldn’t wait to share them with you too!
If you use living books or any kind of chapter book as part of your weekly lessons,
you’re going to love this 5 day spread of self-guided notebooking assignments.

You can read all about each daily assignment and print the free notebooking pages here.

TIP: Print up an extra set and keep them in a folder
for one of those “mom is sick, everyone pick a book” moments.

Happy Notebooking!
