Mother’s Day Art Project for Kids

May 4, 2018 By Valerie Mcclintick Leave a Comment

Mother’s Day is just over a week away and we’ve got some beautiful new printables you can use to create unique gifts and keepsakes for Mom.  As a homeschooling mom of four, sometimes I miss out on the secret projects and presents that kids make in class to bring home for Mom.  When my children got old enough to start creating projects I admit that it felt a bit awkward to assist them in making Mother’s Day related projects. But, once I realized how happy they were to GIVE something to me, and that they didn’t care that I saw the project along the way, I learned to relax a little around this time of year.

I learned that there is joy in working on a project with my children and that whatever the end result left us with, there was always a fun keepsake that I could cherish for years to come.  That is the thought behind some of the Mother’s Day Printables I’ve created and I hope that you’ll be inspired to print them up to work on with your own child.

The first project is a Mother’s Day Keepsake Booklet that includes 8 pages for students to fill in the blanks to keep the storyline going.  This is a super cute project for students that are able to write on their own, or for when you have enough teacher help to support transcription.

This might be my favorite Mother’s Day project because it provides such cherished responses from children, that moms are sure to love.  If you are using these in a preschool or daycare setting these are perfect for that too!  Moms will be surprised at the fun ways their children fill in the blanks to the story questions.

Younger students who are not yet writing too much might enjoy this simple cut and paste Mother’s Day Balloon Boquet.  Each heart features a character quality, with two blank hearts for children to customize.  We used our  NOYO Crayons for this project because they blend so well.

If you’ve never heard of NOYO crayons be sure to check them out.  They remind me of oil pastels, but you can get them wet and paint with them, and they dry super quick.

NOYO Crayons 36piece Set

1 CRAYON, 3 WAYS TO COLOR! Crayon-pastel-watercolor. Our NOYO crayons are buttery smooth. 36 vibrant colors glide easily and blend like pastels. Add a dab of water and voila! a watercolor effect! The bold pigment won’t wrinkle paper or crack when dry. Easy to smudge and it follows your way through with thick and beautiful effects. Our NOYO gel crayon is absolutely loved by teachers and a classroom favorite because of its versatility. These art crayons are a classroom must-haves.

First, we colored the hearts with one color leaving the edges blank.  Then we went back with a second color and colored the edges.  The result was some fun color combinations that make the balloons pop!

Students can cut out the hearts on the easy cut lines then arrange and paste then on the bouquet sheet.  The result is a fun keepsake they can present to Mom on Mother’s Day!

Here are some links to get you started!

Mother’s Day Poetry Printables

May 6, 2013 By Valerie Mcclintick Leave a Comment

Our Poetry Pack was such a huge hit,
(especially the concrete poetry templates)
that I thought I’d whip up some Mother’s Day themed templates for you.

Mother’s Day Poetry Template 1

Mother’s Day Poetry Template 2

There is absolutely NO SHAME in printing these up yourself,
and leaving them on the breakfast table with a set of markers.

You can even leave our instructions for concrete poetry so the kiddos know what to do with them!

These are sure to be adorable keepsakes once the children have filled them in.

Have you used any of our Poetry Printables yet?
What do your kiddos think?

Gifts Kids Can Make….

December 14, 2012 By Valerie Mcclintick 12 Comments

Okay, so I don’t know about you,
but finding gifts that children can make can sometimes be troublesome.

Especially, when you wait until a week before Christmas to get started.

Ahem.

Anyway, if you have a child who is interested in making gifts for family members,
next week is a great time to put the Christmas break to good use.

Especially when they can create something like this:

My nine year old made these.
Trust me, they are simple!
And Cheap!

This would be a great project for young tweeny boppers too!

So here’s the deal:

Materials:
Wood
Stain
Paint
Sandpaper

And here’s how to do all that on the cheap:

1. Visit Home Depot and head to the back of the lumber aisle. They should have a discount bin, where you can snag a board like this for practically free. Actually 51 cents, but if your kids flash a pearly grin, and ask adorable questions like, “What kind of wood is this?,” and “Do I need to sand with the grain?” then you might just score them for free.

NOTE: I have only seen the discount bin empty one time. You may not score the same size board as we did but there is usually always something to work with. Try to take the STRAIGHTEST board with no SPLITS.

2. Cut your board. HD will do this for FREE! or if you have a saw at home, that works too. We cut our boards at about 14 inches. We got FIVE signs out of one board! SCORE!

3. Paint your background color on your board. Use a lighter color paint, as we will darken it up a bit a little later. (Sissy’s signs were painted white and light blue to begin with.) TIP: While you’re at Home Depot, check their paint department for the “Mess Ups” rack. I often find a small tub of paint for 50 cents!

4. Choose your word. Pick a font that is crisp and easy to paint. Print it at a size that will fit your board.

5. Follow this chalk tutorial for transfering your word to your board. Or use graphite paper, we’re cheap and there are ALWAYS little chunks of sidewalk chalk around our house.

6. Paint your word. This is the longest part, go slow, don’t fret over mistakes, we can sand them off…and we want it to look shabby anyway right? We have a basic paint brush set from Wally World that included a slanted tip paint brush….this helps quite a bit.

7. Shabby your board up a bit. Use sandpaper to rough up your word. Hammer in some dents. Rough up the edges…ect.

Don’t be afraid to take out some big gouges!
Where ever there is bare wood showing, the stain will soak in.

8. Use a wood stain over the paint. This is the most expensive part of the project. Wood stain is about $8 at Home Depot, but it will last you a lifetime! You literally use a dab of this stain for each board. I love Minwax Jacobean for most projects.

To stain your board: Wear gloves, dab an old rag into the can, and then wipe it over the whole project, let it set for a few moments, then wipe it off. Throw away your rags. (I read somewhere that staining rags can self ignite…and that is not good right? So toss them!)

Mom or Dad can do this part too, if you’re nervous about the kiddos handling such a noxious product.

9. Let it dry. We move ours indoors because it sets quicker. Afterwords you can spray a poly coat on if you like, this is just an extra step to protect the sign if say you needed to clean it for some reason. Not necessary, but if you have the spray anyway, give it a quick shot.

10. If you want to be fancy, hammer a hook or a picture holder into the back.

All Done!

Total Cost
$.51 wood
$8 stain
_________
$8.50

On Hand:
Sandpaper
Paint

$8.50 makes about 5 signs….so that’s about $1.70 per gift!

Not bad.

Maybe Mom can make a few too?

Now that I think of it,
This would be a great project for the entire family,
you could easily make words like JOY and Peace…

or maybe Welcome!
This sign literally cost me about $1.00 in materials.
(board, stain, paint)

Stay tuned for some more shabby projects,
my camera is full of photos to share!

Buggy Baby Blankie

September 13, 2009 By Valerie Mcclintick 7 Comments

Try saying that 5 times fast.

Today I was SUPER-Inspired to get crafty after I read this post over at Dollar Store Crafts. In fact I’m often inspired after visiting that site, and it gives me all sorts of excuses to make another trip to the Dollar Store! I never should have subscribed to their RSS Feed, I’m getting absolutely no work done.

Well today the blog featured a Crinkly Baby Blanket, and I just couldn’t resist, I just had to make one for Monkey:

However instead of making the blanket Crinkly, I added in little bugs to the corners that are crinkly instead. I don’t know what possessed me to do it this way, but I think it turned out really cute.

In case you want to make one to, I’m sharing photos of the whole process.

Step 1: Pick Your Fabric and cut it into a square shape. You’ll need a front and a back I chose some buggy fabric that I picked up LAST Summer and some Fleece from Last Winter. Yeah, real quick turn-around at my house!

Step 2: Cut out the Shapes you’ll be using for your corner pulls. I cut out 4 bugs, one for each corner, but I only ended up using two.

Step 3: Cut out a backing for the bugs from the backing of the blanket fabric. You want to cut about 3/4 of an inch around them for your seam allowance.

Step 4: Cut up an old Baby Wipes wrapper to fit inside your shape.

Step 5: Pin a loop of ribbon to the right side of your fabric. (see photo) Place right sides of front and back of fabric together and sew around, leaving a small hole for turning.

Step 6: Turn your shape right side in, and stuff with the crinkly baby wipe wrapper.

Step 7: Sew all the way around the edge of the shape, taking care to fold the fabric around the hole so that it blends in with the rest.

Step 8: Pick out some fun ribbons that will match the theme of your blanket.

Step 9: Cut the ribbons into strips. Form them into loops and pin them to the right side of the fabric (see photo) They are facing inward now, but when you turn it right side it, they will face out.

Step 10: Pin your shapes in the corner just like the ribbons. I folded the dragonfly and pinned him because I didn’t want to accidentally sew him up when I go around the edges!

Step 11: Place your fabrics with right sides together and sew all the way around the edges, leaving a small hole for turning.

Step 12: When you turn your blanket right side out, the shapes will now hang from the corners.

Step 13: Sew around the edges of the blanket, taking care to sew up the hole by folding the fabric inward to blend in.

Step 14: Wave Blanket in front of baby till he’s good and scared of the big red beetles then swoop in with a big smile and a sweet voice and rescue him from dose’ mean scare-wee bugs’
