Bird Nest Craft for Kids

BirdNestPinThese little yarn nests make a great craft for Spring. Build your nest a day ahead of time for the glue to dry. And have scrambled eggs for
breakfast so you don’t waste the food! Inspiration for this craft came from No Time for Flashcards a wonderful resource for children’s
crafts and activities

Materials:

Yarn, Glue, Balloon, Eggs, Toothpick, Blue Paint

Suggest Resources for a Unit Study:

NestFullofEggs-155x125       birdnest    birds   BirdBinoc

Art Project Tutorial:

Step 1

Build Your Nest: Since we learned in the book above that robin's use mud to help their nest stick together, we mixed glue with some brown paint to make our mud.

Step 2

Blow up your balloon, and place into a bowl. The larger the balloon, the larger the nest.....just remember it takes more yarn, more glue, and more time to make big nests. Begin by dipping your pieces of yarn into the "mud" and layering them on the balloon.

Step 3

Get the yarn nice and "muddy" to ensure that it will stick together. You don't want large piles or a bunch of yard that isn't glued on. Set this on a counter to dry at least overnight. Ours was large for two days.

Step 4

While your nest is drying, you can get started on the robin's eggs. To do this you can use your toothpick and poke a hole at either end of the egg. hole, and blow out the egg into a dish.

Step 5

Mix your paint to make robin's egg blue. We used Crayola Washable paints. We mixed together blue, green and white and came up with a very pretty color for the eggs.

Step 6

Use your paintbrush to paint the eggs. Don't worry about the holes, just paint over them, and set your eggs in a carton to dry.

All Done

After your nest is dry, pop the balloon and remove it carefully from the nest. Place your eggs inside, and keep this on your table for spring!

Bagel Birdfeeders

April 6, 2009 By Valerie Mcclintick 4 Comments

Since we’ve been busy learning all about our little bird buddies, we decided to add in a little backyard fun to the mix! We snagged this book from the library, and have delved into the wonderful world of backyard birds.

Bird Crafts

There couldn’t be a better time, I think, to be learning about them. Every morning we’ve awoken to the sweet sound of these little creatures, and my children are fascinated every time they catch a glimpse of any kind of creature in our backyard.

The glimpses are short lived however because, as it seems, the neighbors have better birdseed then us.

You see, we use the Cheepy “Wild Bird Seed” mix that you can pick up at any Walmart…

….And apparently, the birds in our neighborhood are accustomed to a finer dining experience. Ones that involve ears of corn, pine cones and Fancy, Smancy, Bird-Mansions.

But today folks, we’re taking back the neighborhood (birds)

And we broke out the heavy artillery: Peanut Butter.

Straight Up Dawg.

(LOL, I giggle inside everytime I say that)

Ahem….You read right, No more Mr. Rogers friendly neighborhood around here people! We brought out the Peanut Butter, Bagels, and Birdseed for a deadly combination we like to call: B3

And what my kids didn’t snack up, we actually fed to the birds.

Or, Kind of…….we can’t really tell if the birds actually got to eat any of these delicious treats, because the morning after we hung them they mysteriously disappeared.

Vanished.

Was it a lonely squirrel searching for a midnight snack…..

Or could it be our mischievous neighbors, combating the B3 bagel with a Special Opps night mission?

You be the judge.

Just to be sure, when you make yours be sure and hang them from a tall branch. Not from a fence where the neighbors can reach it.

Here are step by step instructions for these Bagel Birdfeeders!

Bird Seed Poetry

March 31, 2009 By Valerie Mcclintick Leave a Comment

Today we worked on a little Bird Seed Poetry. We’ve been learning about birds, starting last week with Robins, and this week with general backyard birds.

Bird Crafts

We’ve been going through this adorable book called “About Birds: A Guide for Children” by Cathryn Sill. The illustrations of the birds are very detailed and “peaceful” in a sense.

And for us, nothing brings out the peace, then poetry, so we decided to combine our learning about birds, with a little bit of rhyme. So today the kiddos worked on these wall hangings I like to call “Bird Seed Poetry” where they decorated an adorable little birdie, and placed a poem alongside it.
