Scripture Art

January 30, 2012 By Valerie Mcclintick 4 Comments

watercolor paint

Ever since the kiddos saw my new watercolor set,
they’ve been dying to dig into the bright colors and try them out!

And since the weather has been dreary all week,
I decided that it would be a great time to really bring out the color.

(Inspiration via: this great lesson in our Artistic Pursuits curriculum,)

We practiced blending across the page, lots of water and lots of overlapping.

Then (I) we cut out black construction paper eagles,
from a template that I made.

Then using the free printable paper over at Donna Young,
I had the kiddos copy Psalm 63:7 which reads:

“Because you are my help,
I sing in the shadow of your wings.”

When they were finished, we stood back and saw how stunning they were!

Something worthy of prime real-estate in our classroom gallery!

Sugar Cube Igloo

September 28, 2010 By Valerie Mcclintick Leave a Comment

We are wrapping up our studies on the Inuit tribes of North America with a fun sugar cube igloo:

igloo crafts

For this project we watched this dated, but informative video on “How to build an igloo” and paired our craft with this fantastic early reader:

Igloo Crafts

A Look Inside an Igloo

The kids had a blast with this project, as we added a layer of cubes every day to allow them time to dry.

We also spent some time exploring the fantastic videos on Sila. My children were just fascinated by these, so far they’ve seen the building of an igloo, the hunting of a caribou, and even a church service with a lesson on Moses. I haven’t seen them all so I’d recommend watching them on your own first to decide, as often with Native American culture you can get into spiritual discussions.

This week we also reviewed what we know about Arctic animals with this fun Arctic Animals File Folder Game!

Stay tuned for more Native American Crafts as we move on to the Tlingit tribes!

….by the seashore:

Yeah….not the beach….but even better cause I didn’t have to deal with sand stuck in their every nook and cranny!

The kids had a great time making signs, and pricing their goods:

They didn’t even know they were learning:

It was the perfect day at the beach.

Valentine Trees…or Spring Trees…

February 14, 2010 By Valerie Mcclintick 2 Comments

IMG_0608

Okay, so I’m not really sure what category these little guys are going to fall under, because we made them with rose petals in the shape of hearts…and they look like Spring trees, but Valentine’s Day is not exactly in Spring per-se’ …..so for now we’re just calling them Valentine Trees.

Whatever.

They’re really easy, and they are like a keepsake because you can use them with your children’s handprints…..(Imagine a full bulletin board of these!) I got the Rose Petals at the Dollar Tree.

Here’s the Scoop:

And in other “Lovey News”

IMG_0613

there is a little girl out there who will be recieving 10 inches of the most beautiful brown hair I’ve ever seen (Okay I’m partial).
Sissy (6) eventually convinced me to let her cut her hair to chin length, and while I’m partial to long hair on little girls, It was the “No-Tangles” argument that finally won me over and sealed the deal. (Serious, I’m not the only one that gets screamed at during hair brushing time am I?)

Pitter Patter….

June 4, 2009 By Valerie Mcclintick 1 Comment

…..Pitter Patter….

Hey What’s that sound?

…..Pitter Patter…….

There it is again?

….Pitter Patter……Pitter Patter…..

I know it’s not my children
(they sound like “stomp…stomp…crash…bang”)

And it can’t be the baby
(his range is a bit confined and can only kick my ribs)

….Pitter Patter….Pitter Patter…..Pitter Patter…..

Oh

Now I see what it is…..

It’s the adorable Japanese Sandals we made today…

Japanese Crafts for Kids, Educational Crafts

Sheesh

And I was thinking there were little mice running through the house or something….

I was about to get the gun.
