Geology Crafts

March 26, 2011 By Valerie Mcclintick 1 Comment

I know you’re just dying to know what we made
with all this beautiful playdough!

I meant to post this sooner so as not to make you
wait in anticipation so long!

A few weeks back we learned about the layers of the earth
and this clay made it possible for us to make our own model!

Didn’t it turn out wonderful?

As part of our study we also made an erupting volcano:

And then later on we visited our local Rock Museum
where we snagged these exciting beauties,
and took the hammer to them…here’s how it all went down:

The kiddos were really excited to find the crystals within,
and have been coveting them ever since!

(If you want to break your own, try this kit from GeoCentral)

I posted some quick tutorials on the main site,
under our Geology Crafts section!

And Stay Tuned for some fun Geography Activities
as we revisit the Continents & Oceans next month!

Paper Mache Globe

September 6, 2009 By Valerie Mcclintick 2 Comments

I put up Tutorial instructions for how to make this
(so bookmark for your Geo units because it’s versatile)

Why, oh why did I ever get it in my head to make one of these?

As if my house isn’t messy enough at the moment.

Seriously, I think I just added a week to our “Start School Date”

Even if I drank all the coffee in the pantry,
I doubt we’ll be polished up in time.

But who really starts homeschooling with a clean house anyway right?

Sigh…..

Maybe we can teach Home-Ec the first week.

There’s no law against that is there?

Rainy Day Oregon Collage

August 28, 2009 By Valerie Mcclintick 1 Comment

Summer in Oregon can only mean one thing: Rain.

Lol, actually any season in Oregon can mean rain.

So instead of lounging on the beach, or frolicking in the sprinkler like the rest of the country today,

We spent the afternoon inside making some fun collages:

(Nah, Nah, Nah, NAH, Nah)

Paper was everywhere

Glue was everywhere

But I didn’t mind because Sissy and Bubba had a great time

(Like 2 hours great!)

And of course I had to turn it into a learning opportunity and I designed this fun Geography Craft:

geography crafts

The kids thought it turned out so great that they VOWED that their next collages they were going to make Oregon too.

So here is the basic tutorial

I’m thinking this would be a fun activity when you teach your children about the different land formations, or terrains of your state (or of the US), they could really have some fun with it.

Anyone else have an idea for how to teach with this?
