Teaching Children to Follow Directions

July 19, 2012 By Valerie Mcclintick 2 Comments

A couple of weeks ago we got a Super Duper package in the mail!

It contained something I was really looking forward to,
somthing that could only come from a Super Duper Store.

Isn’t is marvelous?

teach following directions

HearBuilder Following Directions CD ROM
Created by by Susie S Loraine, M.A., CCC-SLP and
Mark Strait, M.Ed., CCC-SLP

This fun and intereactive software will teach your child to
follow increasingly difficult directions using 40 basic concepts in five areas:

Basic Directions
Sequential Directions
Quantitative & Spatial Directions
Temporal Directions
Conditional Directions

Before recieveing this product to review,
I had never heard of such a product!
(You can be sure that I would have ordered it much sooner if I had)

You see I have one particular child who can really take advantage of this program.

Getting real for a moment here:
I have a boy that struggles so badly with listening
that I literally had his hearing checked.

Long story short:

He hears fine.

He just listens poorly.

You can imagine the problems this creates with three other children and a homeschool agenda.

So, I was almost giddy tearing open the package, and loading up the game.

This little child also LOVES his computer time,
so this was akin to giving him candy and ice cream for breakfast.

He kept saying, “Thanks Mom!” over and over through out the lesson.
(yes, he was talking during his lesson….hence the need for the software)

The main goal of the game is to build toys.

But you can’t build toys without tools.

And you have to earn your tools baby.

You earn a tool by listening to the directions and acting them out correctly.

Directions are based on the five concept areas I listed above.

To begin with he was told, “Click on the small boat under the car”
As the game progressed, the directions became increasingly harder;

“First, set the size to small. Second, set the temperature to hot.
Third, set the shape to square. Then, set the color to blue, and press start.”

You cannot start following the directions until all of the directions have been said.

The boy HAD TO STOP TALKING in order to get them correct.

He struggled at this point. He was not happy to get the questions wrong.
But instead of reverting to frustration, he became all the more determined
to earn his tool.

He went silent and really focused.
(I knew he had it in him)
The incentive to listen was great enough to override all the other
distractions going through his 6 year old ADHD brain.

And I hovered over him the entire time, congratulating him with each success.

After his lesson time was over he literally beamed with pride
at accomplishing something he knew was difficult for him.

And also, because his worn out mother has so often yelled said,
“You need to listen dear boy” and here he was being rewarded for such
a good job listening.

Pros:

-My favorite part about his program is that the directions are auditory.
I feel my son needs the most work in this area and that progress will help our homeschool experience immensely.
-Can be used with multiple children, up to four and game progress is saved.
-Classroom size program is also available. (also compatible with SMARTBoard)
-No subscription, you get an actual CD-Rom that you can keep forever.

Here are some other features that you as the parent can set:
-Set levels of difficulty for each activity
-Identify and print learning objectives for all levels
-Add background noise at any level (obviously unneeded in our house…snicker)
-Monitor progress and track data for an unlimited number of students
-Track all relevant data
-Customize and print reports

ALEKS: A TOS Homeschool Review

February 14, 2012 By Valerie Mcclintick 2 Comments

When I started homeschooling one of my biggest concerns was:
How will I know that my children are really learning?

In fact, during the first couple of years I had nightmares
that we’d fall victims to the “Fill-in-the-blank” cycle of teaching.

You see I would spend a week teaching my children all about “Rounding to the nearest 100”
They would complete their worksheets with great accuracy,
then we’d move on to the next subject.

Half a year later, we’re doing problems that require rounding to the nearest 100,
and both of my children are sitting their completly stumped as to what I’m even talking about.

That ever happen to you?

This happens to me in every single subject.
I teach, they listen,
I test, they regurgitate,
I grade, we move on.

Of course NOW….we’ve learned to REVIEW.
(we actually have “Review” as a subject on our weekly calendar.)

And, usually our review sessions are short little verbal quizzes
in which we simply sit and play “Mom against the kids”
to see who can score the most points.
(Mom getting the points for a missed answer)

These types of reviews can usually be done on the fly,
with very little prep work, (and sometimes even in the car.)

But then there is math….
Math is a bit harder to review.
Sometimes it requires an actual sheet of paper to work out the problems.

But most often it’s hard to really know what math concepts my children understand,
and which ones their skirting around or finding other ways to solve.

So our ALEKS reveiw couldn’t have come at a better time:

Photobucket

ALEKS stands for Assessment and LEarning in Knowledge Spaces is a Web-based, artificially intelligent assessment and learning system. ALEKS uses adaptive questioning to quickly and accurately determine exactly what a student knows and doesn’t know in a course. ALEKS then instructs the student on the topics she is most ready to learn. As a student works through a course, ALEKS periodically reassesses the student to ensure that topics learned are also retained. ALEKS courses are very complete in their topic coverage and ALEKS avoids multiple-choice questions.

Did you read that last line?
“AVOIDS MULTIPLE-CHOICE QUESTIONS.”

As a student I used to LOVE multiple choice questions.
As a teacher….eh, not so much.

Photobucket

Here’s what I really enjoy about ALEKS:

–Initial Test to see exactly what my child knows.

–Subsequent lessons, reviews, and testing surrounds only subjects that my child needs to work on.

–There is an “Explain” button.…oh how I love that button
Sissy: “Mom, I need help!”
Mom: “Hit the explain button!”
Sissy: “Oh, I get it!”
Mom: “Zzzzzz” (that’s me snoring and taking a nap on the couch)

ahem. kidding.

–Data is presented in a pie-chart that my child can understand
(seeing your own progress is a great motivator)

–Daily review with each log-in.

Photobucket

–Quick tables are great for speeding up those Math facts

–State standards are easily assessed

Photobucket

–Quizzes show progress made and in what areas.

–You can PRINT out a worksheet to take on-the-go

You can read more about all the different features here

Now, ALEKS is a bit heavy, and more intensive then I first thought.
My daughter is in third grade, the very first level of ALEKS,

And there are initial training programs for children to learn how to use the tools and the functions, so that they don’t miss questions because of a lack of technological ability. This was something I was concerned about for our upcoming state test this year, so I’m glad that Sissy got in some practice.

You can subscribe to ALEKS in a variety of ways:

$19.95 a month,
$99.95 for 6 months of access,
$179.95 for 12 months.

(For families with more than one child, discount pricing is available.)

ALEKS also offers a Free Two Month Trial:
Photobucket

I would definitly recommend trying out the program to see if it’s a good fit for your family. If nothing else, after the initial test you’ll have a great idea of what areas to work on with your children!

Disclaimer: I was given two free months of ALEKS for purposes of this review. All opinions are mine honest thoughts about the product. Read what other TOS Homeschool Crew members thought of ALEKS here.

Kinderbach: A Review

January 29, 2012 By Valerie Mcclintick Leave a Comment

Photobucket

We recently had the opportunity to review Kinderbach!

Kinderbach is an early education piano curriculum for home or classroom use.
The target age for this program is 3-7 years old.

There are 6 curriculum levels to Kinderbach,
each with a very detailed syllabus of what skills are being addressed.

Each level is scheduled to last 10 weeks (with 4 lessons/week)

For each level of Kinderbach there is a cooresponding PDF workbook:

Photobucket

These are included with the online lessons, and certain DVD bundles.
The workbooks include activities designed to complement curriculum standards for language arts and mathematics.

Photobucket

Kinderbach is also in the process of offering their online lessons on mobile devices and tablets.

Cost: $19.95/month for online lessons (discount for a 12 month subscription) -OR-
Purchase them in DVD format in variouse packages (and about $220 for the complete set)

What I Thought:

I currently have a 2 year old and a 6 year old, so I’ll let you in on what they thought of the program.

Monkey who is 2, absolutely loved the characters….especially Dodi. All day long I heard Dodi this and Dodi that..and the short lessons really held his attention. The workbooks however were WAY above his level so he just colored and scribbled along with the video.

Bubba who is 6, enjoyed the video lessons, but wanted to watch them all in a row, sometimes consuming 10 lessons in a row, because they were so short he just wanted more. He enjoyed the rhythm and sound exercises, but the worksheets were WAY below his level so he just ignored them as well.

So…I’m thinking that the target age for this program is probably more like 3 -5 and perhaps higher ages depending on ability level. I also see the value of this program more in the classroom or daycare setting where you have multiple children within that age range. (Or if your own children are spaced closely together you might get more of your money’s worth)

We did have a great time exploring their curriculum,
as did other TOS Crew Review team members!

Pssst: You can try Kinderbach here FREE!
Pssst Pssst: If you check out their Facebook page
you’ll find a 40% off coupon code for all of their at-home products.
This would significantly reduce the cost of their DVD bundles!

Disclaimer: As part of the TOS Crew review team I recieved 3 months of Free access to Kinderbach’s online curriculum.
