Reading Eggs is an online reading program for children ages 3-13.
When you join Reading Eggs you get access to two different levels of their program,
Learning to Read, and Reading to Learn:
Since I have fluent readers over here,
we’re reviewing the Read to Learn portion called “Reading Eggspress”
(Other crew members are reviewing the Learning to Read portion)
When you first enter Reading Eggspress you come to floating island:
Floating island is the homebase for Reading Eggspress, where children can choose which part of the program they want to explore.
There are four different sections of Floating Island:
-Comprehension Gym
-Stadium
-Library
-Apartment & Mall
In the Comprehension Gym your child with take a placement test to assess comprehension skills.
Then children will be able to take comprehension classes and play the daily game.
In the Stadium children get to put their skills to the test and play games against the computer, or other children around the world.
In the Library children can choose from a variety of different books, which are organized by topic.
After reading the book, children take a short comprehension quiz to earn eggs (which they can later spend on the fun activities of the site)
The library is great,
however I do need to stop here for a moment and explain how the library works.
At the top portion of the library you can set the age level of the child using this bar:
This is a very helpful adjustment you can use for making sure your child is at the correct reading level.
However there is no button to completely block out a single book. I believe that this is an important feature that should be added so that each parent can decide what types of books their child be subjected to. There are certain books that are available from level 8 and up, that are what I would deem as inappropriate for my child and I couldn’t find a way to just simply remove the book from the shelf. (For Example there are books on Evolution, Gender Identity ect…)
In the Apartment & Mall children get to put there golden eggs to good use,
spending them on pets, furniture, clothing, and games!
Pros:
Great concept
Children enjoy the games (and learn)
Can be used as a reading supplement
Cons:
Inability to remove controversial topics
