We Choose Virtues: A Review & Giveaway

Today I’m SUPER, SUPER excited to share this post with you.
(Not just because there is a giveaway at the end)
But because I know you’re going to LOVE what I have to show you.

But first. Let me tell you a story.
It’s a story about a little boy.
A little boy who is bigger then two other little boys.
(I’m not naming any names here)

Well this little boy is a genius.
He is such a smart little boy.
He is WAY ahead in every subject,
He wants to know everything about anything,
He will talk non-stop for hours on end,
and his sense of adventure is unmatched.

However, this little boy is emotional.
and aren’t we all?

And this little boy has daily struggles.
He struggles with fairness,
He struggles with jealousy,
He struggles with honesty.
He whimpers and whines
at the thought of doing his chores,

And this little boy got lost at Walmart last week.
You can be sure that he was TOLD to follow.
But the boy just wandered off to the toy aisle instead.

This little boy is Five.
And the battle for his spirit is waging hard.
It is a long, hard, road to travel.
But it’s a fight that can be won.
One that is surely worth fighting for.

“Preach the word. Be ready to serve God in good times and bad. Correct people’s mistakes. Warn them. Cheer them up with words of hope. Be very patient as you do these things. Teach them carefully.” (2 Timothy 4:2 NIrV) -We Choose Virtues Teacher Memory Verse.

From Caterpillar…….to Butterfly!
We Choose Virtues is a character based education program
designed to help you build up biblical virtues in your child.

Using I am statements, simple catchphrases, and countering antonyms
We Choose Virtues takes children through 12 different biblical character traits.

Each virtue has it’s own catchphrases, bible verse, and corresponding activities.

The Teacher Cards are the “meat” of this program.
The front of the card is shown to the children, while
the back of the card provides you with everything you need
to teach the virtue.

Here is the Teacher Card for the virtue of Diligence:

I am statement:
“I am Diligent”

Catchphrase:
“I start fast, work hard and finish strong.”

I am NOT Statement:
“I am NOT slow to get started or lazy, and I don’t quit early!”

Virtue Verse:
All hard work pays off. But if all you do is talk, you will be poor.
Proverbs 14:23 NIrV

(Note: Be sure and get the “Faith” versions of
these cards for the scripture references)

On the back of the teacher cards:

Virtue Verse
Virtue Catchphrase ( I am….I am not….)
Bible Hero with Scripture Reference
Teaching Tip
Kids of VirtueVille Story
Virtue User Challenge
Fun Demonstrations
What to Say After I’m Sorry

These are large (8″x10″) and perfect for large classroom settings.
(There are smaller Homeschool versions of these too)

You can see how handy this is, These are ready to go right out of the box!
You really can just pick up a card and start teaching.

The Teacher Cards come on heavy cardstock with a slick surface.
I considered laminating them,
but they were so pretty I just decided to put them
into page protectors and that way I could store them
in a three-ring binder.

I’m totally loving that decision!

We Choose Virtues has a wide variety of products.
In fact, we were sent a Teacher Starter Kit
which not only came with the Teacher cards, but
also included Virtue Flashcards and a Virtue Poster as well.

The Virtue Flashcards are just as beautiful!
They are vibrant and engaging, and come with game play ideas.
The front of each card features the Virtue and Virtue Character,
and the back includes the catchphrase and bible verse.

The Virtue Poster contains each of the 12 virtues,
virtue characters, catchphrases, and bible verse.
It makes a fantastic reference chart that you can return to
through out the day….again and again as needed.

There are so many other products you can use alongside these Teaching Cards!
There are sticker charts, wall posters, checklists, self-review sheets,
and even a coloring book!

we choose virtues

In Fact, everyones a winner today because We Choose Virtues is giving
YOU a FREE downloadable Coloring book featuring the
children of VirtueVille!

But before you go snag that, write down this coupon code: BTS2011
That will save you 25% off any product until September 9th.

Oh, and while your busy clicking things go LIKE We Choose Virtues on Facebook
because they are very likeable…..and because someday out of the blue, you just might get facebook only coupons and freebies! This is also a great place to ask questions about the
different products to make sure you get the exact program you’re looking for!

And here are all my thoughts wrapped up in PRO’s and CON’s:

Pros:

  • I love the “I am” and “I am not” statements.
Children are being taught that they have the power to choose their behavior,
and even when it’s a reaction to another child’s behavior they are still responsible for that choice.
  • The VirtueVille Characters are unique, colorful, and memorable, helping children to really learn the catchphrases and corresponding bible verses.
  • I found the free character assessment to be helpful when trying to figure out the different areas that we needed to work on with each child.
Not only keeping it organized, but we can look back later and see that we’re making progress.
  • There are so many different options to purchase. You can get just one product, or you can buy an entire kit.
  • There are also products for youth ages 12-18, if you are struggling with an older child.
  • Cons:

  • Before I realized the quality of these products, I was a bit concerned about the pricing. Once our kit came in the mail it was clear that the price was a direct reflection of the quality of these cards.I can’t stress enough about the vibrant colors, and even the feel of the cards. For example, on the flashcards you can actually “Feel” the lettering…it’s slightly raised. As an adict lover of all things “teacher” I totally appreciate these tiny details. As a Mom of four on a homeschool budget, I would make sure I had a good coupon first.
  • And really the only other CON I have is that I want more!
Is it a CON to want more? I don’t know. These characters are super adorable, and modern!! And I’ll be patiently praying for little storybooks about each of them!
  • In Sum, I adore this program. We Choose Virtues is a quality based company with products you’re sure to use in your classroom or homeschool for a long time.
And if you’re on a budget remember your coupon code: BTS2011 takes 25% off this week only. If you only bought one thing I’d recommend the Homeschool Teacher Cards, you can snag them for $26.25 with your discount.

We Choose Virtues is graciously offering a Teacher Starter Kit
to one lucky winner here on The Crafty Classroom.!

The Teacher Starter Kit is what we were sent to review,
so if you’re the winner you’ll be getting:

    The Virtue Poster
    13 Teacher Cards
12 Flash Cards and game ideas

Disclaimer: I was provided this product free of charge, one to review and one to give away to my readers. Opinions expressed in this post are my own honest thoughts about the product.

The product that would most helpful (since I can’t afford the whole kit and kaboodle, but would REALLY love to have it) would be the Teacher’s Virtue Cards-for the faith based family.

A good way to teach the virtues to children is by playing games or even role playing certain situations they may encounter and teaching the right way to react BEFORE they actually encounter it. =)

Oh my, this is a keeper! I am just starting our homeschool career and would love to incorporate this into our day. On the website I think the most helpful for me would be the faith based homeschool kit.

If I don’t win this will end up on our Christmas wish list.

We read a story about a boy who took initiative and made his bed and his parents bed on a Sunday morning when they were running late for church. Since reading that story, my kids get it. They can see opportunity for them to bless and take initiative. My 3 year old will come running to me and proudly say, “I did initiative Mom!” Funny thing is they are just as filled with joy ‘doing initiative’ as I am to hear they did it. I do point that out that taking initiative makes them happy and God happy too.
I also tell that that God sees and God smiles. The people you want to notice may not but that is ok. God sees.
I want to instill in them a desire to please God before man.

we learn about virtues about reading about a particular bible story and the character being taught in the story. sometimes, we act out the story and i ask my kids to tell me what they would do in particular situations. it has become very real and effective.

I like to make lapbooks on Christian subjects both for my Sunday school class to do and to take to my grandson in Arizona. As a grandmother, it’s an opportunity to try to instill Christain character and virtues in his little heart. I like the homeschooling kit as I think it would probably work for both areas. It would be helpful to have smaller cards that you could give to each child to take home.

My Tip: I agree with Jenn Price – live what you teach. Kids are so quick to pick up on double standards, that we cannot allow them. For instance, my youngest keeps checking my speedometer, and also the road signs. If he picks up that I bent the rules to my own benefit, he learns that rules were made to be bent. Now, when he tells me I was going too fast, I say I am sorry, and immediately slow down, instead of making an excuse.

One of the things I do to help teach virtue is to find a bible story dealing with that issue and we read about that person & how God dealt with them. Children often think grownups don’t have rules to follow or consequences and seeing that God deals with adults and even give’s them time outs for making poor choices has encouraged my children to seek to obey God (through) listening to mommy & daddy. they are still pretty little, but they do really want to put on God’s behaviors.

I’m grateful for the scripture list and Character assessments too (which I also downloaded)! My best tip for teaching virtues is to be virtuous yourself! Very, very hard to maintain – but the children pick up so many of our mannerisms, if we’re virtouos then it rubs off on them too.

I love the kit! I think my favorite part is the simple definitions of the virtues on the cards. Sometimes it’s hard to explain the meaning of these words to younger children. The definitions used with this program are at a child’s level of understanding making it easy for them to grasp the meaning.

The best advice I can give for teaching virtues to children is to model them yourself. Kids learn so much by just watching what we do everyday. Be the example you want to see in your children.

Again, we are severly struggling for virtue over-here, but one thing that does seem to be helping is prayer and an attitude change for mommy. I have learned that my girls often react to one another based on how I react to their fighting. When I change my perspective and my reactions, it really seems to help some.

Here’s my TIP for teaching virtues. Actually my husband came up with it. We were talking about Exodus and the Israelites wandering in the wilderness. He came up with DON’T CALF – “don’t DisObey, don’t Nag, don’t Talk back, don’t Complain, don’t Argue, don’t Lie, and don’t Fuss”. What do you do instead? The Fruits of the Spirit! – and then the kids proceeded to memorize and quote Ephesians 5:22-23. Now, every time they violate one of these, they have to quote both the list of DON’T CALF and Ephesians 5:22-23. THEN, they have to tell us which one they violated and which one they should do instead. It’s pretty effective because my kids are getting tired of doing all the recitation. :)

Our church offers a non-religous English as a Second Language program for refugees. We are always looking for great material to use with the kids. I would use the Community Based Teacher Starter Pack! But I would also love the one for homeschool as I homeschool my 2 children as well.

Entry #5 – We repeat catchphrases to our kids. When they “just can’t wait anymore” we say things like, “The great thing about patience is the more you use it, the more you have.” Repeating phrases like that seems more effective than phrasing things differently each time when reminding them of something.

I jsut checked out their website and there are lots of things to love about this set. One of my favorites – I love that they have two different series (one for 3 to 11 yr olds and one for 11 to 18 yr olds) so each of my four kids can get the message at their own level!

One of the keys so far in teaching our kids virtues has been defining them. For example, we look at what obedience means. It is more than just do what I say. It is doing it now and with a willing heart. It is doing what you know you should be doing even if I don’t say it. It is don’t do what you know you should not be doing. We spend a week or two each night at the supper table defining what correct virtues mean and how we expect our family to live it out.

#5: Sometimes I make up stories that have children in them (that are remarkably VERY similar to my own children and also are struggling with the same character issues)…I’ll put the children in a situation and of course, the children in the story choose right every single time. I always include Bible examples in these made up stories. The kids seem to love them and only my oldest (7) has figured out that the stories are about them. LOL!

We love reading Bible stories and talking about them but I think my children struggle to apply it to “their” lives!! I have looked at several programs but this one seems to be exactly what we need! I love the repetition! After looking at the products I wasn’t sure which one would be best for us – The Teacher Kit or the Homeschool Kit but after taking a closer look I think the Homeschool Kit is perfect for our family! #5 Children seem to have a built in sense of justice – or what is fair / not fair to them at least! I have taken stories that they tell me of how they have been wronged and ask them to think about that person or situation in a different light. The girl who was mean – what is going on at home? She just lost a family member and is hurting. I try to get them to look outside themselves and see the other person with empathy the way Jesus does. We pray for that person and talk about opportunities to be patient, kind, loving, etc… I saw a real turn-a-round in my daughter last year with kids at her dance school. Now working on sibling relationships!

Thank you for such an amazing giveaway! The product that is most likely to meet our needs, is the Homeschool Starter Pack. Because they only offer this in Faith Based, I would prefer they offer it with different bible translations for those of us who don’t use the NIrV. Either that or offer them blank with a list of recommended scripture passages. Then I would just print my own clings, and add them to the card! Otherwise, I adore their products!

We take every chance we get to point out opportunities to make good choices and praise our kids when they do make good choices. When a wrong choice has been made, we discuss that and talk about what choices would have been better. We also encourage our kids to point out each others’ good choices.

      5) My tip is something I started recently that seems new and exciting so it’s working for now…I made a weekly calendar and my son fills in an act (or more) each day where he used one of the virtues we’re discussing. It keeps it fresh in his mind and applying the practical part of it in his daily actions.

My tip, which is already encompassed by this curriculum (obviously), is to refer children to the Bible verse that discusses the virtue/character fault that we are working on, so that they can hear it from an authority higher than a parent.

Something helpful I have done in the past in teaching character to my kids was have them memorize definitions to character traits and when I saw them doing those traits (for example: obedience), I highly praised them for doing that. Pointing out their good character traits really seems to help them understand what they should be doing.

One thing that I’ve found that helps children learn virtues is to lead them to understand it themselves. Have them figure out what they’ve done wrong, what they should have done, and what virtues the right behavior exhibits. Discovering it themselves works better than you just preaching it to them.

Things we do for character quality, is to refer to a person in the Bible whom perhaps has had difficulty with the quality in question. We discuss what the person did and how they opened up their hearts and mind to God and his plan for them. And if they did not try to overcome a difficult character quality it stood in the way of them being part of God’s plan and for being blessed. For my children with special needs understanding that perhaps a person they look up to in the Bible had character issues and had to overcome it with God’s help, it makes it seem more real and something that they can do. Hope this helps.

Last year for our character studies we would pick a character and read a book related to it and study a memory verse. This year during our lunch I have been reading stories from The Children’s Book of Virtues by William J. Bennett. They love this collection of poems and stories and can’t wait until the next day to hear more. They seem to really stick with them.

I did not see this original post, so I thought I would try again.

I do not normally enter giveaways, because I just do not seem motivated to do so.

This giveaway is different as it pertains to helping my children continue to work on character traits that are very hard to put in a concrete and hands on, visual way. My three youngest have Autism.

The products I am impressed with so far, after viewing the website, is the assessment, the list of Bible Verses that pertain to character quality on their website. The first tools help me to see where we could still use some work.

Next, the verses help me to direct my children to the verses in the Bible that help back up what Mom is teaching. Remember God is the one we answer to, and then Mom.

For us the cards and the packets in the giveaway would give us the needed visuals and hands on component. This being the reason I decided to try.

The best tip I know for character building is to be the best example you can be…and surround yourself and your kids with others who share these same values. It’s also ok to let your kids know that everyone makes mistakes (including you) and we just have to pick ourselves up and start again.

this year, now that all 5 of my kiddos are big enough to understand we were going to use “Character Counts” activity books, add in our own Bible verses and have a small bulletin board to coordinate with whatever “virtue” or “character” trait we are studying. :=) My oldest 2 will be doing story starters as well as reading books to go along with the specific virtue.

We have always dealt with character training as it happens. We try to always have a verse to address the issue and always bring it back to God’s desire of action/attitude not making it about mom or dad.

We just started using the Duggar Family list of character traits. We are memorizing a scripture right now for gentleness instead of anger. We’ve been talking about ways to be gentle and trying to correct when anger gets the best of us.

Virtues Tip: One thing that we have done is label good virtues when we see them in our children’s behavior. For example, we say, “Thanks for being honest.” or “That was a very kind thing you just did by sharing your favorite toy.” We also speak into our children what we want to see in them. For example, “You have such a kind heart.” and “You are good at telling the truth.” It makes them want to show these good character traits even more :)

Here’s my tip for teaching virtues to children. First of all, of course, virtues need to be consistent in the teacher’s life. I really like finding stories to read that emphasize virtues. The book The Quiltmaker’s Gift written by Jeff Brumbeau is a beautiful story that teaches about the joy that comes from having a generous heart. Reading engaging tales and discussing them is my favorite way to instill virtues in my child’s life.

My tip for teaching values to kids is to give them good examples of good virtues being used. I like the Nest History Classics. They always show that the people struggled for what was right and that they (usually) turn to God for strength. But honestly I think the best example is when we exhibit those virtues ourselves and talk about our need to be patient or kind, even when we don’t feel like it!

By the way the slash cards are very cool!

The poster or teacher cards would be the most valuable to me. I am just embarking on my 2nd year of teaching my 2 children with additional needs (Grades 2 and 5). The hurdles they face can make things difficult, when you add in an equally impulsive sibling and an unsaved dad, teaching a godly attitude and character require constant attention. God’s blessed me with a sure fire way of not having the luxury to forget that I also need to model that! Of course SOME days, it doesn’t feel like a blessing, but I know it is really : )
It was hard picking which would be the most useful!

Though all the products listed on the website appear to be wonderful, the Homeschool Kit would be the most beneficial to our family. I am schooling a second grader, Kindergartner, and Preschooler this year. We are memorizing a verse each week that ties to particular character traits. It’s a lot of work for me to find verses and stories that illustrate the trait while also making it applicable to various ages.

Tip : We choose a character trait of the week to focus on. We talk about it all week, write the definition on the board , and try to put it into practice. When a child gets “caught” demonstrating that character trait, they get a “character mark” on the board. Whoever has the most points at the end of the week, gets to go to the store with Dad and pick out a “character treat” for the whole family (usually a sweet treat).

Something that has worked with my kids are the OLD Music Machine albums – that were recently remade into CDs. We just sing the songs as catchy reminders to, for example….Be Patient, Be Patient, don’t be in such a hurry! My kids learn so much from music – Bible verses, grammar, geography, multiplication tables, etc.

a tip: modeling the virtues you are teaching is essential! Complimenting others virtues whether in front of the person or your child hears you say it to them or someone else is an encouragement as well

      Here’s my “tip” entry:

My son is still a little too young for me to have too much experience with teaching virtues, but I did work on teaching virtues at my church. I found with first graders the thing that really stuck in their minds was when I could find an example in how someone was acting in their classroom, point it out, and praise the good (virtuous) behavior to the rest of the class. That really provided good application in their minds.

TIP: The only thing I find difficult for my pre schoolers is that your posters have “big words”,as they say. I need to break it down for them when i put them up. One more thing that will make you really diverse is if you have a few things in spanish. I attend a biligual church and I only have a few spanish posters or coloring sheets. It would help out to have a little more resources.

TIP: I have started cooking with a child individually a night and then once a week usually all of the kids will help cook dinner with me. They are learning a lot about being helpful, working together, and following directions! AND, Praise, praise, praise kids (even if they aren’t your own)when you see them putting their virtues into action. You can see their faces light right up when they were told they did something great, AND they try to keep on doing it!

I think coloring pages are great to give a child while you are reading them a story about the particular virtue or at any time. Children follow along better when they are able to keep their hand occupied. They are able to listen to the story and then can answer your questions. There are so many great offers on the website for other products as well. I cannot wait to try some out!! Thank you again for sharing your giveaway.

One thing that we do is talk about why the behavior was wrong. Repent and ask for Jesus to help them to do better next time.

Sometimes when talking about different topics/character traits, we will roleplay to see what that behavior looks like and how it would make others feel, etc. For some reason, this seems to really make my daughter see it from a different perspective.

Teaching virtues is something that doesn’t happen once. I find small teachable moments (usually unexpected) the most helpful. Also watching a program like Little House on the Prairie and seeing that family learning virtues is helpful too.
