Review: My Princess Bible

There is also something about little girls and glitter.

Sadly, almost everything that is pink, and glittery in the toy aisle, clothing store, or bookstore for that matter comes at a cost.

Not so much a monetary cost, mind you, but usually its a trade of innocence for some pretty possession.

And it’s not always so obvious.

Sometimes with “Princess” type products however the message is a little more clear:

Take The Little Mermaid princess for example….anyone else notice that she’s only dressed in a bra…made of shells? Oh, but it’s fine because, you see she’s a mermaid…..

Or maybe Princess Jasmine from Aladdin?….why she is dressed like a belly dancer is anyone’s guess?……

And more recently, Tinkerbell……they could at least give her some pants….even leggings would be better then nothing…..whatever happened to wearing pants?

Yup Face it.

Today’s mass produced princess products lead your daughters to believe that being half naked, and sparkly is more important then being respectable, and pure.

Scary.

I don’t mean to be all Doom and Gloom and pointy fingered toward society, I just wanted you to know where I’m coming from (i.e. how frustrated I am with my own Disney upbringing) and why I love to review products like this one:

When Tyndale first shipped this out to us, I didn’t really know what to expect. From the title I thought it might be a children’s bible with a pink cover on it to look all “princessy”

(that’s a word)

And on first impression that’s what it seemed to be: PINK & GLITTERY

After opening it I was thrilled to see that it wasn’t just a nicely wrapped pink bible. It was a collection of Bible Stories that involved God’s Princesses. I was so excited, that I think I squealed out loud.

You see, I have one of these books myself! And I love it to pieces…. It’s called Women of the Bible, and it has really helped me to see how God views me as his own daughter and princess.

So to be able to have a book that shows my daughter the same thing is such a blessing!

And I’m really happy that the Biblical reference is listed next to each story….My daughter should be able to learn more about each of these women from God’s word on her own!

There are 20 different women through out this book, each with a short story and a life application that is easy for children to remember.

Here are some examples of what being God’s princess means,

“Doing what Jesus wants….Giving Jesus the best you have…..Loving and obeying God…..Telling the truth…..and Keeping your promises…..”

These applications are short enough for children to remember, and are a wonderful starting point for further exploration.

The book wraps up with a special rhyming message, asking your child, “What makes a princess? It’s now up to you, will you learn from each princess just what to do?………Now as you grow up, don’t forget this one thing: You are a princess, since God is the King!”

My only problem with this book is: The title “My Princess Bible” led me to believe it was a bible. Maybe “Princesses of the Bible” would be more accurate. Am I just being picky here?

And my other problem is simply that we didn’t own it sooner! My daughter is seven years old, and I would say that it is geared more towards 3-5 year old children. The pages are board book style, and the stories are short, but still when I handed her the book before bed one night her face lit up like I had given her some secret treasure. Then ten minutes later she emerged from her room to show me that there was a princess in the book with the same name as her! (imagine that?) and with the same color hair as her no less….and for that she was quite enthralled!

And I loved that there was a princess like me:

(pregnant!…not old….yet, but isn’t that nice that the authors remind children that even as we grow up we are still God’s cherished princess!)

(btw….I’ve yet to see a gray haired princess hit the Disney shelf…..)

Anyway, all in all this is a score in my book! Definitely want this one on your Christmas list if you have a special little girl to buy for :)
