Is that even possible?

Yes, Yes it is!

I can’t believe it’s taken me 3+ kids to figure this out.

Sheesh.

Actually, I’ve never had a reason to even think about it because my first two kiddos were just fine using the cheapo wipes from Walmart.

But then came Monkey Butt

And his little tush is too sensitive for even the most sensitive of wipes. Don’t even bother suggesting your brand…..I’ve tried them ALL.

In fact the only type that I can use on him are these (and really….their Breastfeeding Wipes for Mom):

They cost a pretty penny at $3.44 for a pack of 80.

(Yeah 80! We use every corner of every wipe…..Trrrrrust Me)

So during one of my usual Rants visits in our Church Nursery, one of the ladies suggested that I make my own.

Really?

It sounded kinda “Hippie-ish” to me? (I’m extra Hippie Sensitive living in Eugene….forgive me) But of course the idea began to grow on me, more and more until I found myself wandering the aisles of Target this afternoon for papertowels and baby wash.

And now that I’ve made some, I don’t think I’ll ever go back. Forget Hippieish….this is FRUGAL! A roll of Viva paper towels (which I chose because they are very thick and soft) yields roughly the same amount as 2 packs of store wipes. The difference in price was about $4.00, and 5 minutes of my time. (Do the math……I’m worth about $80 a hour people!)

So I had to share the process of course….because now I know you’re wondering how it all works. So here is my Not-Hippish, but Totally Frugal way to make Baby Wipes.

What You’ll Need (What I used):

2 1/4 cups Water (Straight out of the Tap)
1/8 cup Baby Wash (Johnson’s)
1/2 Paper Towel (Viva, “Choose a Size” Print a Coupon Here)
Air-Tight Tub (courtesy of P.F. Changs)
Knife (Bread Knife with those sharp teethy things)

Now before you start…..of course you can customize the recipe to fit your needs. Baby can only have organic….use organic…….You want lavendar smell….use some lavendar oil or something. There are a whole bunch of recipes for this stuff online (wouldn’t ya know) and you’re sure to find something useful if you do a quick google search.

Now here are some photos of the process:

First we cut the paper towels in half. (one roll makes two tubs of wipes….but I’ll be making one at a time till it’s all used up)

Next remove the cardboard tube from the center of the roll. Now the tube is connected to the final sheet of the roll so it might stick a little…..reach your fingers in detach it and fold the tube into fourths to pull it out easily.

When you pull it out you’ll notice that some of the inner towels come with…..this is good and makes a nice dispenser if you want to use your wipes like this.

Then of course mix up your wipe solution. Water + Baby Wash.

Place your paper towels in your airtight tub, and pour the water over them. I tried to pour evenly around the paper.

Let the wipes soak up the solution and keep them covered until you’re ready to use! I think you’ll get about a weeks uses out of these and you just make them as you need them.

Now I wonder……Anyone else make your own baby wipes? What other things can you make homemade for baby.

Come on, tell me……I promise I won’t call you a Hippie.

Not just another hippie idea, LOL!! I’ve also seen moms cut up recieving blankets and use those for baby wipes with the baby wash mixture. They’re washable and reusable–totally frugal, but just a little beyond my comfort zone, lol.

I live in Panama and cheepo wipes run $4 a package! I started making my own wipes with my second son. I use one half of the paper towel to make wipes and with the second half, I replace the baby shampoo with Green Works cleanser and waa-laa!! instant toilet cleaning cloths – which come in handy with 2 boys in the learning stages!

BTW – of you cut the paper towels with an electric knife, you’ll avoid that bothersome paper towel lint!

i use cloth diapers and cloth wipes! they are easy to use and you can just throw them in the washer. i do admit that it’s kind of gross when they poop, but 1 cloth wipe can clean their whole bum!! (btw, i’m not a hippie…just decided to stay home after my 3rd was born and thought being a mom of 3 wasn’t challenging enough so i decided to cloth diaper)
    =)

Okay I know I’m a year late, but I just found your blog recently :) Anyway, you’ve probably discovered that Target makes their own brand of wipes for breastfed babies. I love them and they’re much more affordable. Just thought I’d throw that in :)
