Bumbo Fever

April 18, 2009 25 Comments

No, it’s not some sort of rare South American disease that you need a ton of immunization shots for…..it’s the crazed, and heated obsession with all things Bumbo….thus

It’s Bumbo Fever Baby!

Just for some background…………..I’ve been so busy lately hitting all the second hand stores, and garage sales, that I’ve almost got all of my baby shopping complete,
but it’s taken a toll on my “get-up-and go-edness”

(sound it out, it’s funny)

And for the first time in my life, I’m almost ready for baby!

I’ve got 12 weeks to go before baby arrives in July, and I’ve got less then 5 things left on my baby list.

(Yeah, I have a baby checklist….it works people)

And even thought it wasn’t on my list, I bought a Bumbo chair.

I didn’t even know what a Bumbo chair was, until I saw the tag that read $6.00, and then I knew I had to have one. I put it right next to my Boppy, under the crib.

(speaking of, why does everything have to have such a Bubbly name….Bumbo….Boppy…..Binky….Bouncy Seat…..Burpy………okay I made that last one up….but really?

Do the creators of these baby items think we’ll only buy their products if they start with B?

I even checked the Bumbo FAQ’s and they’ve failed to list exactly why it’s called a Bumbo…..spending most of their efforts focusing on Safety Standards, and other silly stuff….sheesh.

Anyway, whatever the thing is, and no matter what it’s called I’m glad to have one….it’s one more concrete step in the right direction of preparedness. (I think that one is actually a word)

And I’ll even let you in on a little secret. I’m actually hoping that I only have 10 weeks of pregnancy left, that would put us full term at 38 weeks and right around the end of June. Why so eager? I don’t know, but I’m sure it has something to do with the indigestion, backache, stuffy nose, and the sharp pain shooting down my legs that my Dr. says is completely normal.

Okay, well…….you got me. I’m blabbing again………about being pregnant again…….sickening isn’t it.

Oh but listen, you dear reader are saving my marriage, because if I keep telling my husband how excited I am, I think he’s going to scream…….pull his hair out……or move into the garage or something drastic like that

…..and seriously, I need to park my car in there!

This is Oregon people, and Spring means RAIN.

Okay actually, I’m so baby focused because my bloggy friend Carisa has just posted pictures of her new born little girl, and I’m soooo stinking jealous.

(Not painfully jealous, but definitely longing for my little blessing to be here too……whether or not I’m actually stinky is a matter of opinion……but in my defense, I’m pregnant and I put on 8 lbs this month so I’ve been working hard.)

(Oh, I laugh at myself.)

So this week when I wasn’t running around like a contestant on Supermarket Sweep (remember that show, I used to love it!)

or giggling at the adorable newborn face of Carisa’s little “Ladybug”…..

I was actually teaching my children…….

But I didn’t take any photos,

because seriously, who brings a camera to a garage sale?

Yeah, that’s right, we learned about counting money……finding bargains……..being frugal……..ect

And if we really wanted to get snooty about it, (i.e. What would I tell the state agency assigned to monitor my homeschool status)
I’d probably say:………

“We took a hands on learning approach with U.S. currency, while observing the Social interactions of Urban Oregon Families…
(went to a garage sale)……

Then we learned all about the consumption of Fuel and the rising costs of outsourced industries, and it’s effect on our economy….
(stopped at the gas station)….

And after that we threw in a little Anatomy 101 and the effects of controlled substances (drugs) on the human body…
(stopped for coffee)…

And during an afternoon scenic drive we worked on Sentence Structure, Grammer, and the overall use of Adjectives in American fiction….
(told silly stories all the way home)

What’s funny is you think I’m joking.

Sigh, next week we’ll do the worksheets like good little homeschoolers.

Hi Valerie. Its been awhile since I’ve been around. I love the new blog. I can follow those better . :) I had to tell you I am expecting too. I am 21 weeks and counting. We are just as excited as you are. We are expecting a baby girl.

I love to garage sale too. Yesterday I found a toy shelf with the individual bins for $10. I had gotten one for my little one awhile ago but was excited for my son to have one too, since he has all those action figures and legos.

Anyway I’ll be back. I wish I could design my blog as nicely as yours is. :)

I know those chairs looks so totally cute, but all of the stuff we keep getting our babies to help them be propped up is so bad for their development. There are many specialists who believe that sitting baby up too soon can lead to learning disabilities later. I try to keep in mind…would my mom have had this to use this with me?

I just like to pass the word along, as we are spending way too much time, undoing things to help my 10 year old now.

I LOVE IT!!! Especially the way you were able to count garage saling as a school day! :D My evaluator would have told me to do the SAME thing! :D

  8. I love the descriptions you would write up for the “state agency.”
It made me realize how close I am to the end of the school year and that I need to order my standardized tests…YIKES!
Congratulations on being “almost baby” and so very ready.

  9. Congrats, Valerie! I had no idea you were pregnant. Where have I been?

In my defence, I am also pregnant (due the end of August), so my brain has been mostly absent lately. Ha! I can totally sypathize with the aches and pains. My left hip has been giving me trouble, so I’m limping half the time. And I can’t eat anything even mildly spicy withut suffering for it all night. I sure hope these kids appreciate what we go through for them. ;-)

I’m checking out your baby checklist. Since my last child was my “last” child, I’m having to buy EVERYTHING again. Ahhh!!!!

  10. You are too funny. Great pictures…I have a blog, but it is very BASIC, how do you get the cartoon pictures on there? I have followed you for a LONG time with Lapbook lessons, I will now ADD YOU TO MY BLOG LIST

I had a Bumbo that someone let me borrow this time around with my babies, and I LOVED it. It is great! Congrats on getting all your shopping done and being close to the babies arrival. You totally deserve to be this excited, but I understand the husband thing…..mine never shows the level of excitement I have.

What a hilarious post! I have NEVER heard of those Bumbo things either. The last part of pregnancy lasts waaaaaay too long, I agree. Enjoy being able to go out and about without the diaper bag, nursing blanket, stash of binkies, rattles, desitin and everything but the kitchen sink while you can :) Blessings!

new to your blog and love it!!
we borrowed a bumbo withour 2nd child and we LOVED it!! We used it the most at the beach. 2nd child hated the beach and the bumbo was the perfect thing to keep her contained and from touching the sand.

  16. Angela says:

LOVE the BUMBO. It is awesome. BTW, it doesn’t prop up their head, but it does let them sit up sooner. Both of my girls loved the different prespecitie it gave them. Congratulations!

  17. Heidi says:

I got your blog link from the lapbook group. I just wanted to say that your pregnancy ailments and excitement for baby and not wanting to bug hubby is so familiar sounding. I just had our 3rd baby 5 weeks ago and your blog reminded me how impatient i felt to have her, i was so excited. Funny thanks for the giggle and i love your homeschooling explanations.

  18. Mairs says:

I love my bumbo! We borrowed our first one ever for number 10 and she loved it, we loved it – great addition to The List! Wish I’d had one for numbers 2-9 as well (number 1 was such a spaz he never would have been in it – thus the safety warnings on the FAQ! lol)

  19. Found you through the Lapbook group. I’m a fellow home school mom blogger who blogs about frugal homemaking, so yes, we LOVE garage sales as well. :)

  20. Valerie,
Thanks so much for another great site. I use lapbooklessons and your other sites quite frequently. Thanks for using the gifts that God gave you!!! I posted a link for you on my blog: . Thanks again and God Bless!

  21. I don’t know where you find the time to do all that you do.
But I am blessed and grateful for it!
LOVE< LOVE, LOVE this new blog.

Whew, and I didn’t even know you were expecting.
Congratulations. So excited for your family.

  22. You are hilarious! I’m so excited for you! I didn’t know you were pregnant until I snuck into chat one night just as you were leaving and you said something that made me think you must be, but you were gone and didn’t answer me. Carisa’s baby is adorable, isn’t she? I’m so excited for both of you. As you know, I think babies are the best thing God ever created.

    Love,
    Penney

  23. Jolanthe says:

Oh Valerie. That was a great laugh for my morning! Love your standards of learning. :)

  24. Tracy says:

    Hi Valerie,
I bought a Bumbo for our last baby and it was great. He was number 5 and so loved being able to sit up and look at what was going on with his siblings. It is a very bizarre colour though.
I am due in July also. I have 10 weeks to go. I’m hoping to be a couple of weeks early and make it June also, mainly because we have 2 birthdays and our anniversary in the first couple of weeks of July, lol.
    Many Blessings,
    Tracy

  25. Hey Valerie. THis is the first I saw THIS blog of yours. I like!!
I love garage sale (and I do have a camera- heehee. I keep my digital in my purse!)
I also love Carissa and her newborn Little ladybug. Not only all that but I LOVED supermarket sweep. I remember watching it during one of my births -at the hospital- after getting my epidural! I wish they’d bring that one back on air!

Thanks for all the great stuff on your blogs. I miss doing Little Laplinks with my son. That is what satrted my lapbooking with my younger crowd!
Take care! Stop by my blog sometime and I too wil be sure to visit again soon.
P.S. Let me know if you are on Facebook! I’ll look you up!
