Pioneer Quilt

One of our most recent topics for American History is The Oregon Trail. I realize that most children don’t really start learning about the Oregon Trail till a little bit later (like 2nd or 3rd grade), but I figure since we live in Oregon it would be a good place to start learning about our our state history.

So to kick off the learning we started with this adorable book we checked out from the library called “Papa and the Pioneer Quilt” The story is about a little girl who is traveling The Oregon Trail with her family, stopping to pick up fabric scraps along the way. Of course at the end of the story they reach Oregon, and the little girl has a bag full of scraps to make into a quilt for her new life in Oregon.

So, I let Sissy raid my “Scrap” bag and she found two different fabrics she wanted to use for her quilt.
Here’s what she made:

She is really excited about making this little blanket, she’s going to give it to the baby (due in July) as a lap blanket for the car. And of course I think it’s just adorable to see her giving heart, and her desire to welcome her little brother into the world!

and how Sissy made her quilt.
